You have to do what ever it takes to survive???  It sounds like this bear was starving and out of energy??  I never go any where without a handgun when i'm in the wilds even if its my snubbie 357mg.   BigBill

Unfortunately, as I read the article I realize that he was in the more handgun unfriendly part of North America (Canada   ), but he should of had at least a double barrel shotgun with him to check his birds.

It takes a big man to bring a knife to a bear fight :-)

I remember a couple of years ago a guy got into  a bear fight with a kodiak. He used a buck knife. Anyways he won. He said that on the 4th or 5th jab to the neck he felt the bear go limp. He then got his rifle and shot it. For an old man ( I think he was in his 70's) he did pretty darn good, considering he walked out. He still has the knife in a plaque and still hasnt cleaned it. My wife talks to him alot and the story is unreal.
