i am considering re-chambering to 250/3000 ackley improved. i have read p.o.ackley's books and am intrigued by the possibilities. there are so many powders and bullets that were not around when p.o.a. did his work that i would like to hear from any and all of you who have current experience with this round. thanks!
good luck and good shooting!

The great thing about this AI round is that you can die form  250 savage improved cases from .243 winchester cases without having to fire form.

Advocate - what dies do you use, how much pressure does it take to turn the 243 into the 250 AI? I am also interested in this round. I did some graphs with load from a disk and with a 100 gr hpbt going around 3200fps it was very impressive.

Hi Flora66,
Advocate won't be able to answer your ?. He was messing up, ended up in a disagreement with GB. GB won. As to your ?, I've never tried it,(243 to 250) so I don't know for sure, but here's what I think.
When forming a 243 win to a 250 sav., you have to shorten the case about .135". Now the dicy part. When you form the "new" case you'll be pushing the new shoulder back. In doing so, it "may" require annealing, prior to, or after forming.
I'll admit I'm not sure one way or the other, in this situation. But it has been my experience when shortening case, (usually more so) that annealing is common practice, prior to forming. I'll also admit, that as I get older,I get lazier.
So, to me, fireforming is easier. And it provides practice. Even though they print different than my full loads.
But you can check with any of the die mfg's. for forming dies. :D

I have an xp100 with a 15" barrel in this chambering. I use 22-250 brass and AA4350 powder. I get 2800fps out of 100gr Ballistic Tips. This was my desired velocity and does nott appear to be max in my gun.

Slim Chance-
How much powder do you burn to get that velocity?  I have a bolt gun in this caliber but haven't found a load it really likes.  Thanks

Dear Wm in Fla,
I have been shooting the 250AI for about 27 yrs now and it has been my "rifle of choice" for the last 12 yrs or so for these Blacktail and the Elk. I started off using the commercial brass but switched to the L.C Nat Match hulls about 20 yrs ago. They hold a little less powder but the pressure being the same I get 3109 fps with the Nosler Solid Base bullets and this is not max. Just a very accurate hunting/target load. I had the Sierra BT 100s going almost 100 fps faster but the group opened up to 1.2" This is in a Rem 600  with  a McGowan barrel, kevlar stock and modified bolt with M-16 Extractor. Total weight is under 6lbs with a Redfield 1 3/4 x 5 scope.
I sized the 243 brass down to 250 Sav and trimmed to 2.910 and fire formed with a cheap bullet and 9grs of Bullseye. Then loaded moderate loads and shot for group/pleasure. Then loaded for the real thing. Never had much problem with the brass but my own rifle has a personal like for the L.C Nat Match ,100 Nos SBs and IMR 4350. I have 5-6 pages of loading data if you need it. Hope you enjoy your 250. I think you`ll find it can really do the job as well or better than a lot of other cartridges.

aggshooter,
I just checked this thread. I'll have to check my note on powder charge.
