New Rifle Story
« on: February 08, 2004, 02:13:15 PM »
Hey everyone!  I'm new to the sight so forgive me if I make some rookie mistakes.  I have a story that begs mention on this sight.  I had been searching long and hard for a good varmint gun for ground hogs and racoons around the farm.  I am on a tight budget, so the varmint workhorse 22-250 was a little bit too expensive fer me.  I decided on the latest and greatest .17 hmr.  I had my heart set on the Savage, but then the shop where I was going to buy couldn't get the heavy barrel version.  He cut me a deal on the Marlin 17V with a Simmons 3x9x50mm scope.  I got it on tuesday evening, I got ready to go do some shooting on wednesday morning.  I loaded everything up in my car, including the rifle.  (I need to stop right here and paint a background scenario for you.  I live in Columbus Oh, where there is some idiot taking pot shots at cars on the Beltway, and they haven't caught him yet.)  Somebody saw me put the rifle in the car and called the police.  Next thing I know, Columbus Police Department pulls me over on the interstate and wants to see the rifle.  It wasn't a huge deal, but it's kinda funny.  The officers were cool about it, they just asked me where I was going and what kinda rifle it was.  A couple minutes later I was on my way.

I have a big duffle bag that the gun cases go into before I leave the house. Keeps the neighbourhood from knowing there are guns in the house.

Good idea on the Duffle bag!! Yea when I was a kid I could walk downtown in our small town with a gun and no one said a word. Now days it seems like they see a gun they have to stop you to see what is going on. to me that is harassment but it seems like we have to deal with it. Jim
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

when I was in High School you  could take a rifle to school to hunt with when you got out as long as it was locked in the trunk or in a locked case in the front of the truck.  Can you imigine if you did that now!  That was only 15 years ago.

BeltwayMarlin,

First let me Welcome you to Graybeard Outdoors.  The best forum on the net for hunters/shooters going today.  :D

With all the crazy idiots today shooting up everything it's no wonder you got turned in.  No, times are not like they used to be like when I with to high school I was customizing rifles in school as shop projects for grades.  Now they won't even let the kids wear t-shirts with the names of beer companies and such on them.  Oh well, again Welcome to Graybeard's.  Lawdog

Welcome to Graybeards from a fellow Ohioan :D
Sorry to hear about your "incident", glad it worked out o.k.  Supposedly they got a better decription of a possible shooter from a guy that had his car shot at from an overpass.  Hopefully they will get them soon.

BTW - I have a 17VS, it's a great shooter, you'll enjoy yours.

Not trying to hijack the thread but I had to share - When I went to high school guns were frequently found in the back windows of pickups in the parking lot and after school, we would often go hunting with our Chemistry teacher - that was 20 years ago.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone.

I've gotten a case for the rifle, so when I take it out it isn't so obvious that I own a rifle.

I hope they get this highway shooter soon.  He got two cars yesterday morning.  Nobody got hurt, and they got a vague description of him.  The thing that gets me the most about this is that you know somewhere out there, there's some radical group that's saying this is all because of the guns.  If we get rid of all the guns, we get rid of all the shootings.  That makes about as much sense as me saying that if we get rid of all the automoblies on the road, there won't be anymore accidents.

Guns don't kill people, people kill people!

Just a though but maybe what would be a big help for your police and all hunters/shooters in Ohio is for the hunters/shooters to take their spotting scopes out and see if they can help spot this nut shooting up cars.  Take down license numbers of suspicious vehicles and help catch this idiot.  We need all the good Public Relations that hunters/shooters can get.  Lawdog
