I'm trying to find a book I read as a kid in the early 60's. Any more I find that on occasion my memory remembers some things that weren't and doesn't remember others that were, but I think this is about how the story went:
A young city boy, early teen or late pre teen, was given a .22 semi-auto pistol by his dad. They were out in the woods and he was separated from his dad. I'd guess they were in the Minnesota/Wisconsin/Michigan area. He killed a badger with the pistol and felt bad about it. It was winter and he got lost, then found a cabin with a young native kid living in it. The native kid took him in, taught him how to live in the woods, make snowshoes etc. and eventually the city kid got back to his family.
I think it was written in the 40's or 50's. It wasn't a literary masterpiece but it's one that had some influece on me when I was young and I'd really like to find out what the title was. Thanks!
