Bowling Ball Mortar
« on: August 24, 2010, 09:54:29 PM »
Anyone else see Episode 64 of Pawn Stars? They had a Bowling Ball Mortar the Pawn Shop bought. A bit confusing, as they discussed the powder chamber walls as being 1/2 inch thick, (they looked much thicker, over the one to one ratio), while the walls of the Mortar were 2 inches thick. Seemed to be a bit of a disconnect there! Kind of disconcerting to see them standing in a semi-circle about 15 feet from this thing, but anyway, it shot well, and "exceeded their expectations". Said it weighed about 700 pounds, which seemed about right.....what the guy wanted vs what they gave him for it was quite a spread!

The margin in the pawn business is huge, primarily because of the unknown ability of the loan shark to recover value from the pawned objects.

When I was in the Army (1969), I took a guy to a pawn shop where he got $25 for his whole bag of golf clubs.  He needed a visit to Juarez more than the clubs, I guess.
