The Great Sioux Uprising and Minnesota's two front war
« on: January 11, 2011, 04:47:55 PM »
In 1862 the Dakota (formerly popularly known as the Sioux) staged an uprising (these days instead of being call the Great Sioux Uprising, it is usually referred to as the Dakota Conflict) in Minnesota. Estimates are that 400 to 800 settlers were killed. Dakota deaths are unknown. While some Indians attacked whites, others did their best to hide and protect whites. It lead to the expulsion of most Indians from Southern Minnesota, and the largest mass execution in US history. 38 Dakota were hung. The local whites wanted to hang 300, but Lincoln commuted the sentances on most. Some Minnesota families had members fighting in the Civil War while other family members were dealing with Indian attacks. You can read a little about one family's experience in this artilce, from today's Mankato Free Press newspaper:

You brought this up once before in your attempt to paint Lincoln as a saint. It truly has no bearing on the WONA as I don't believe Minnesota ever came under direct Rebel attack. Of course I may be wrong and if you find some record or facts that are substantiated please share it with us.

Your wording is both misleading and untrue and could be used to show that every state in the Union was fighting enemies on two fronts!

Therefore could you please try to stay on topic rather than to rehash an old post into a new thread. It is both wasteful and repetitive.

Just say so and I'll add it into one of your other Lincoln threads or post, gladly!

Hi Ga.windbreak

I posted it yesterday because the link led to an article that was in yesterday's newspaper. The newspaper article dealt mainly with two Union soldiers. The newspaper article also gave info about the concurrent Indian attacks, which were motivated in part by the Indians' realization that many of the white men were off fighting in the Civil War. The execution of the Indians is one of the most
startling details about the uprising story. Lincoln's hand in  it is part of the story.

Do you only want topics that say 'the South was great, the North was bad and Lincoln was bad' ?

Or does some other Civil War related history also belong on this site?

Then why not title your thread "Civil War letters come to New Ulm museum" and leave it at that?

Heck, using your style here, a post about the Battle of the Washoe House should be titled

"Drunken Whoring By Union Soldiers Prevents Their Punitive Raid On Peaceful City."

(actually, that is more accurate than your thread title, since your article is about the letters and briefly mentions the Indian raids as an aside, whereas the Battle of the Washoe House involved Union raiders going from Petaluma toward Santa Rosa to avenge the death of Lincoln, and stopping at the Washoe House - a roadhouse and tavern - for refreshments and other entertainment, then going home, being too tired to continue on their punitive raid)/

Hi subdjoe

So now you are a literary critic?

Speaking of being off topic, what does the Battle of the Washoe House have to do with the topic of this thread?
It is a rhetorical question. You don't need to answer, but I would bet that you will.
