45-70 loads
« on: August 26, 2010, 04:13:53 AM »
My "new" H&R shikari in 45-70 showed up.It has Creedmore sights on it .Looking to start reloading for it.I have Hornady 350 grainers and picked up a  box of PJ Creedmore 538's for the heck of it.I have had shoulder surgery in the past so I'm looking for a light load for some 100 yard shooting.Any suggestions?

There are literally hundreds and hundreds of loads for the 45-70. Just about every powder known to man can be used in the 45-70. Lots of bullet weights and styles too. There are entire books dedicated to 45-70 loads.  Start googling and looking at web sites and search forums, there are links in this forum to great light load data. You could look at some load books too. I could easily fill a hundred pages to answer your question.

34.3 gr. Reloader7 with a 350gr. plain base or bevel base lead RNFP bullet.  I currently buy Dardas but am about to experiment with some from Western Bullet.  I've used the same grain weight powder with FTX or interlock bullets.  They don't kick hardly at all. ;)

10-14grs of Trail Boss with any cast bullet that will fit in the case. I shoot 330gr Lyman HP cast bullets and 405gr FP cast bullets with the same power weight, 10grs. Both are accurate, one's just a little faster than the other. 1100fps and 890fps respectively. I wouldn't try that with jacketed bullets though, they stick easier and are harder to get out. ::) :o  ;D Don't ask me why I know that....... ;)

Thanks, Dinny

I use the 405 Gr. and 385 Gr. lead rounds from Montana Precision Swaging. I load them up with 28 grains of H4198 for eithed round and get about 1300 fps. Very accurate @ 100 yards out of my 22" barrel and very low recoil. No shoulder relocation here ;D just a slight push. I have been able to shoot all day with these loads and not get sore.
