I've observed that the guns that become popular with civilians are the guns that have become popular with military and police.
My proposal for the gun control crowd is to lobby hard to require police and military to go back to using rocks and perhaps flintlocks and arquebusses and even atlatls. After about 10 years of seeing their favorite action heroes onscreen using single-shot muskets maybe those evil civilians will change their preferences to use guns just like that instead of autos. This will also eliminate the conceal and carry problem because there aren't any arequebusses, and darned few flintlocks, that will fit conveniently out of sight.
