The Model 10 did come with heavy barrels.  If you look at the barrel the 38's are set back more than the 357's.
When I picked up the 17 the other day there was a heavy barreled M10 in the case.
It has me thinking.
I wonder if I can have Novak tritium sights cut in like they are on autos.

A few years ago I had an idea for a S&W revolver line.  The idea was medium frame large bore CCW and IDPA revolver.  I was looking at my M65 3" and wanted a 44 Spl version with a little longer barrel and night sights. So I sent in a letter to smith asking if they could or would make an:
L Frame.
5 Shot 44 Special / 44 mag if the frame could handle it, 41 Mag, 45 colt, then make full moon clip versiond for 45acp and a 10mm / 40 S&W version for IDPA and CCW.
Round butt
4" full under lug. (thought the extra few onces would help with recoil for the 10mm, 41mag and 44 mag versions.)
Fixed novak Night sights dove tailed into the gun.(just like they do on their auto lines)
Wrote smith about it.  Telling them they could have my ideas.
They came out with the 669 that was close but not exact and only in 44 Spl.
The nite shade series are closer but none has the 3 or 4" barrel, they do have the night sights but not dove tailed into the frame.
Once they came out with the 357 J frame Model 60 with the 5" barrel I thought it would be a great idea to have one in 44 Mag on a L frame.
I was thinking of getting the M10 HB to see if it can be done as a concept and later find an L frame and build what I want

Like many i have  toyed with that concept but always think the 357 is already built . why lose a round or two . And the 357 has best one shot stops .

I think a warm loaded 180 grain 44 Special.
1,250 FPS would be better than the 125 grain JHP at 1400 FPS.
I really think a 1,100 FPS 180 grain JHP would be better than the 125 grain reducd loads in the 357.
I also really like the Rem 200 grain Keith Hollow point that was accurate with a mild recoil.

One thing to consider is cyl. wall thickness . With a short bbl. it will take fast powder and high pressure to get those speeds and the 357 offers a bigger margin of safety.

So I am looking for an N frame.

There was an outfit called Spokhandguns that offered the conversion you are considering.  They took S&W K frames and installed 5 shot 44 Special cylinders.  A neat little package for those who like the 44 Special.   This was back in the 70s or 80s and I have not heard of them lately.

It is still a popular debate in some circles as to which is better, the 357 with those little bullets at high speeds or the 44 Special with decent sized bullets at moderate speeds.  I would opt for the 45 long Colt.
