Why is everything good bad for you?
« on: August 24, 2010, 08:52:20 AM »
Forget about giving a kid a cigarette or a beer. These days, a bacon cheeseburger or a non organic milk are treated like poisin. What is wrong with the mothers of America? Just because they are obese is no reason to inflict their issues on their kids.

Like Jack LaLane said, "If it taste good spit it out".

I too wish my mother had known a little bit about nutrition as I was growing up and taught me to eat properly in my formative years.  Today my comfort foods are the ones I ate growing up, and they are what has put me in the shape I am in now.  Overweight, plugged arteries in my heart, and I too am diabetic.  Ok, no more Red meat, no more white carbohydrates (Rice, Potatoes, Pinto Beans, and Bread, especially Corn Bread).  No more shrimp or lobster.  From now on it going to be fish, vegiees, and some fruits.

Those three things are foods I never ate growing up.

Why regret things that you enjoyed?
Every day we live is one day closer to death. Does this make living it's self unhealthy?
Besides there's no sense in arriving at death's door in perfect shape

I have known informed and conscientious people who ate correctly and exercised and died young of heart attacks.  Why?  They were genetically prone, and because they lived such a sensible life, they never got checked.

I have found that no matter what or how I eat, my cholesterol is high without meds....

My Dad said about a year before he died that cigarettes and jowl bacon did what a million japs tried to do but failed. I believe a lot of folks were raised eating what their family could afford too. We  rarely eat fried foods, haven't in years, still I had open heart in 2003 and am still not in great shape with a weak and enlarged heart. Fast food has helped make a lot of folks unhealthy, fat, and lazy. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

Life is too short not to eat good food.

Life is too short when the food is too good ;).

Growing up in the south, I'm having a hard time cutting back on the bad stuff, but I'm trying.  Too many people today think "My granddaddy ate this stuff all his life and lived to be 98 years old!".  Most don't realize that their parents and grandparents were of a financial situation that made it so that they were only eating those greasy meals as a special treat.  Most of the other time it was fresh vegetables out of the garden and the like.   Nowadays food is cheap enough that we can eat those bad meals every night if we so choose.  What's even worse is that the best tasting food is now often the cheapest - you can get a cheeseburger combo at some places for $2.99 with a drink.  A salad is $5 with no drink included :(.

I'm seeing a LOT of people in this area now dieing in their 50's or early 60's.  Food is good, but it's not worth 20-30 years worth of life gone.

That said, some of it is ridiculous.  Most of the "organic" industry is full of it.  It still hasn't been scientifically proven to make one iota of different whether you're eating regular bulk veggies or "organic" ones.  The important part is eating the veggies in the first place, not how they were grown.

Personally I've been trying to take up more different types of cuisine as a preventative measure - particularly Japanese as sushi and a lot of the side dishes often consumed with sushi are typically fairly healthy (as long as you don't get the Americanized deep-fried varieties :)).

Both my Grandma lived into their 90s.  My Dad and Mom are both in their 80s.

Of their five boys, I'm the oldest.  I had a by-pass at age 55, and now have eight stints.  I'm overweight, but very active.

Next boy down had a stroke two years ago, and is morbidly obese.  Very inactive as well.

Third boy, had a heart attack at age 50, has several stints, and is limited on his activity.  He is also morbidly obese.

Fourth boy, has had three stints put in and is morbidly obese.  Limited activity.

Last boy is in his mid 40s.  Eats right, not overweight, physically active, and is the only one that seems to be doing everything right.  Of course his wife plans all his meals, and dictates what he can and cannot have to eat.  She looks after him, right there Lionhunter?

Slim:  My first wife bottle fed my oldest son.  They never were very close, and today they can not stand each other.  Kirk is 6', average build with a beer belly.

My second wife breast fed Sky for his first 14 months.  Sky is very close with her and they look out for oneanother.  Sky is 5'6" 175lbs of solid muscle, less than 3% body fat.  Sky looks like Arnold did when he was in his early 20s.  Couple of weeks ago when I had a medical problem Sky picked me up (250lbs) like I was a rag doll, and carried me to a gerney.  He is lifting over 700 lbs three days a week at the gym.

Often wonder if how their mothers started them out in life had any thing to do with how they turned out.

Often wonder if how their mothers started them out in life had any thing to do with how they turned out.

Probably coincidence.  My mother bottle feed me, my brother, and my sister (that's in order of age, oldest to youngest).

I'm the "people person" of the family.  I'm pretty close with everyone, and am probably the closest of us 3 kids to my mother.

My brother and my mom get along fine, but they just don't talk nearly as much.  He's closer to our dad than me (where I have about the same relationship as he has with our mom - get along fine, just don't talk as much).

My sister - if I can I don't like them to be around each other "unsupervised" because they can't be in the same room for more than 30-45 minutes without things erupting into a screaming match.  They are ALWAYS at each other's throats.  She's about the same with our dad.  Not as bad, but give it long enough and they'll be arguing too.

I get along with both my siblings just fine and maintain a close relationship with both, but they very rarely really talk or hang out with each other (they don't argue like with the parents, they just don't speak much).

Just different personality types.  I have an aunt that breastfed both her children who now pretty much never speak to her.

Eating the right foods at a very young age is the key.  My boys didn't even taste candy until after they turned 2.  They drank ONLY water and mother's milk.  Now they drink only water and cow's milk. They think any other drink burns their mouth...it's too sweet. Ask my kids if they want a piece of fruit or a bag of chips and it is fruit hands down.  They eat anything I put in front of them and say thank you mam.  I was fortunate enough to be educated in nutrition before I had children, but I just wish my eating habits were as good!

HEATHER. Good job. I know people who think that getting thirsty means they have to have a coke, they can't seem to drink water. You are proof that kids get used to the foods they eat. City kids eat a lot more fast food than country folk do. They get used to it and refuse to eat real food later in life. Obesity and diabetes are rampant anymore. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

I'm with LONGTOM. Still doesn't keep me from getting a yearly checkup though.  ;D I think genes has a lot to do with your physical well being. It took me 72 years to need help with my cholestol. Started Crestor 4 months ago and 3 months later the level is ok. My blood pressure always checks in the 120s/70s with no meds. But I'm just a kid. My mother is 105 and she doesn't need any help with either. We have the same doctor and he jokes that she will probably outlive all of us.

I don't think bottle or breast feeding has a thing to do with how a person's personality turns out. My kids, my grandkids, and my great grandaughter were all bottle fed after the breast thing didn't work out for any of them. They have all turned out well as adults (kids and grandkids) and the Little One is the sweetest kid you will ever run across. Funny thing is none of the bunch are crazy about sweets and a couple of the grand kids just won't eat them at all.

Either death (or rather, the time of it - life is a condition with a 100% fatality rate ;)) is pre-determined or it's not.  If it is, then there's no sense using any safe handling practices on guns, or concealed carrying for protection, or the like, as you're not going to die until "your time" anyways, so why bother?

If it's not, then "your time" is an adjustable date affected by outside factors, be they a mugger or a bacon double cheesburger.  If you regularly look down the muzzle of your gun to see if it's loaded my guess is your time is going to get here a lot sooner than the guy who plays it safe.  Eating carelessly isn't as dramatic a way to do it, but it'll affect your date of departure just as surely.  There's no rush to speed up how fast it gets here ;).

I think that's spot on.  I've got two nieces - one just turned two a few weeks ago and the other is turning 2 this October.  The younger one in particular has been feed nothing but healthy stuff.  She LOVES fruit.  When she wants a snack she gets raisins, not candy.  She drinks milk and water only.  I've got quite a few fruit trees in my back yard and when she would come over anytime this summer the first thing she'd say is "Boo-buhs!!" (Blueberries) or "Appa-tee!!" (Apple Tree).  She actually says pear and peach correctly without the cute little variations, but she'll ask for those too.  I'd take her out there and she'll pick the fruit right off the tree and eat it.  I've seen that baby pull herself up into a recliner where the side was higher than her head - she looked like she was rock climbing going up into that thing.  We're already planning on starting her in gymnastics in another year or two.

I don't blame God for when I go or anything else bad that happens . After Adam and Eve decided on knowlege we have had choices good and bad . You can give yourself to God and try to make the right choices . He will guide you and protect you but the choice is yours .
