Jeep tires and axle ratio
« on: September 22, 2010, 09:11:07 AM »
I'm in the market for a new Jeep Wrangler, and they comes in different packages.  Some of them have different tire sizes, and I can't quite understand the logic Jeep is using with the rear axle ratios.

The Wrangler Sport comes with 29.3" diameter tires and a 3.21 rear axle ratio (3.73 is optional).

The Sport S, Sahara, and the Mountain, all come with 32" tires and the 3.21 ratio (3.73 optional).

The Rubicon also has 32" tires, but has a 4.10 ratio.

These are all with the 6-speed manual.

It seems strange to me that if the Sport performs OK with 29.3" tires and 3.21, when they went to bigger 32" tires, why didn't they also make the 3.73 ratio standard?  As I understand things, when you go to a bigger diameter tire, you should go to higher number axle ratio to keep the "performance curve" (or whatever they call it) in about the same place.

My question is, I plan on buying the Sport model, and then putting my own tires and wheels on it, probably something in the 32" range.  Should I get the optional 3.73 ratio, or does the 3.21 ratio work OK with the bigger tires?

Go 3.73 and higher if possible

Yes, definitely go 3.73, and get sure grips in both front and rear diffs if they still have the option. I had a 90 wrangler with that combo and the old inline 6 cyl engine with 31" tires (ones I put on, not original size), and it worked great.

Thanks for the advice, guys.   I printed that chart of tire sizes vs ratio vs RPMs.  Very interesting!

Now I need to find one at a decent price.

probably so they can maintain there fleet gas milage requirements. Ive got a 4cyl and it has 410s as do all the 4 cyl sticks. Ive got 32s on mine and it is a gutless pig. I wish i could afford 488s as im sure it would be more drivable and probably give me better gas mileage to boot. As it is you seldom drive it without your foot burried on the floor board.

I got the 410's with 32's and the 4.o and it is a mules so far. I need to get my winch mounted but IN have the Warn M12000 and I think it is way to much.

thats an excellent winch and a guy can never have to much power but it will be a bit heavy on the front of a jeep and depending on your lift my cause some tire clearance problems.
