Bolt wont close completely with one paticular round,,,why??
« on: August 02, 2010, 04:16:04 PM »
Its a brand new gun and a box of new factory ammo, it feeds the all the other rounds (so far) perfectly, but with this one paticular round the bolt dont will go almost into the lock position but not completely (finally did but quite a bit tighter than normal).

I looked the round over (and compared it to others from same box and nothig I could see) and on the sides of the bullet ther are some very faint marks.

Can some one clue me in as to whats going on ?

I have loaded the magazine sevral times with different rounds and they feed thru except this one, its probably nothing much at all but I would just like to know.

        Thanx in advance.

More than likely it is slightly longer rim to sholder than the others.  You didn't say what kind of round it is but, likely if it is a non rimmed round, that is what the answer is.  If the bullet was seated too far out hitting the rifleing you would see those marks on the bullet.  Larry

What he said. Also it could be the shoulder radius hitting the radius in the chamber. I had a full box of 243 ammo given to me by a friend that wouldn't fit his rifle. I have the same rifle as he has and it chambered mine just fine.

It's a .243, I kinda wundred about the seating but figured since ther brand new the case should be ok (for all I know).

I assume that the head spcing would be correct from the factory, never heard of one out of adjustment, this weekend I'm gonna pick up a different brand of shells and see what happens.

I have a rem 700 vls in 308. And had some problems like you describe. After checking out the cases it appeared that the bevel
just above the case rim was not machined properly. Not completely machined. The excess metal prevented the extractor from
snapping completely over the case rim. Frank

If the radius on the shoulder was the problem the headspace may still check ok. It's measured from the bolt face to a point half way between the neck and body starting points. An extractor jam should leave a mark on the extractor groove. It may be a case that's slightly long and the neck terminus may be hitting the end of the chamber. Sounds like you've a really tight chamber. It should shoot well.. Good luck!

You said you noticed faint marks on the side of the bullet.  Sounds like the bullet may be seated a little long for the rifle, pushing against the rifling when you close the bolt.

Use a magic marker to black out the bullet and brass and try chambering. Carefuly take the round back out and it should show where things were rubbing.
be safe and god bless
