20 ga. rifled barrel first time deer hunt for a runt.
« on: August 01, 2010, 01:40:16 PM »
I have a first time deer hunter going out who is small in stature  but big in heart.
I put together a 20ga rifled barrel with youth synthetic stock and forearm
still a lot of gun to hold up and see through the scope,  he looks like he is trying to LIMBLE LOWER NOW>

it is a 24 inch barrel, can I take 4 to 5 inches off of barrel length ?
will I cause it to kick like a mule ?  throw accuracy off ?  I can even make a bipod up if need be.

My problem is : one bad experince either sighting in or  practicing. He won't ever try this again

Illinois we can't use a 410 or a rifle

Ideas ?

I shoot 2 3/4" lightfields out of my Tracker II 20ga and recoil is very mild even off the bench I was very surprized the first time I shot them

Well I used that rig for the kid in my avatar at 14, but he was never small in stature,, AND by that time I had him broke into 50cal ML recoil (That might be a better option for ya, can you use ML's?).

The key isn't really holding the barrel weight, Shoot off a bench when training, it's the recoil issue that can wreck'm.
Fill that synth stock with lead and spray foam, make sure it has a good recoil pad (I installed a Limb Saver) and be sure he holds it tight too his shoulder.

My experiance with the Ultra Slug Hunter barrel was that it liked lower velocity shells, stuff in the 1400 range grouped better than stuff faster than that.
He got his deer at 80 yards, just like the t-shirt say's  ;D

I've got two 22 inch Pardners a 20 ga. modified and a .410 full.  Neither beat me up, and the 20 chucks slugs just fine.  (the .410 does too, but illegal in your area).  I'd give the 20 a try with him.  I admit it is still more than I want to lay on a little kid.  Can you use pistol caliber carbines?  I believe from what I've read here, you can.  If so, he won't even know a .357 or a .44 mag went off.

the whole class was amazed   blew me away also.

still need to know if I could cut this barrel down to around 20 inches  will that effect aim & kick. ?

Not trying to sound mean but if he can't hold up and aim a 6 or 7 pound gun he probably ain't ready to hunt. :-\
Maybe he could just tag along with you for a few more years.

I have shot slugs out of my 20" Tamer 20 gauge. Nasty. On both ends.

if hes hunting from a tree stand or blind just make sure he will be shooting from a rail or rest. that way he wont have to hold the weight of the gun and the scope wont be hard to settle down. i highly suggest get one of those led sled rests. just dont put any weight on the tray so some of the recoil transfers to the shooter. he will be abale to enjoy shooting without the pounding on his shoulder. double up on the hearing protection. maybe foam ear plugs and a headphones.  less noise is better. after that maybe look into a youth muzzleloader. i still kill deer with 70 grains of pyrodex and hardly a kick.

I have a 20" USH.  It's MUCH louder than stock and since I chopped off barrel and flutted it and took the weight out of the butt it now also kicks MUCH more.  That being said my 7 year old shoots it great.  My 10 year old won't touch it though.
This is the day that the Lord hath made!!  I will rejoice and be glad in it!!

You might get more ideas on what the gun will do short, if you search Shorty in the H&R forums.

I do have a cut down 12, but I am a little bigger ;)

Good for you for bringing another to the shooting sports.

i highly recommend the Limbsaver recoil pads. You can get a slip on version at walmart for about 20 bucks, small fits the handi stocks real good. Very versatile, if you have more than one handi you can move it around wherever needed. Don't start him out with a hard kickin gun....Mike

Hey casca1, I have an USH 20ga. its a great shooting slug gun! I have to be careful about the recoil because of injured shoulders, but anyway. I shoot the Remington managed recoil buckhammer slugs, I get very good accuracy with them and not the beating of heavier recoil. All I have mounted on it is a 4x32 BSA scope, it gets the job done! scout4<><
