Henry .22 lever action
« on: June 08, 2010, 09:07:46 AM »
Guys after reading all the rave reviews I am thinking about buying one of these for this year squirrel hunting. I am a smaller framed guy and am thinking that the youth model would be perfect for hunting. My question is with a 13LOP can I easily mount a scope and two how accurate is it? I am looking to hit a orange Birchwood and Casey 1" dot at say 40-50yds more often than not. In short I am trying to keep them inside of a quarter. 5 shots at 50, buy would probably settle for a half dollar. Thanks Kirby

Do you need two different threads to ask this question?

The Henry 22 rifle is a very cheaply made rifle, And, I haven't heard any rave reviewes on it. With plastic sights and rough cast internal action pieces, what is so good about it?

People who have them seem to like them, and I have heard that the company is very responsive to customer service issues.  I have looked at them a couple of times and was not impressed, but everyone has different needs in a rifle.

If you get one go for the Frontier model.

Here, let me help you with that...

I LIKE my Henry lever 22 mag. VERY much, it's the smoothest lever rifle i've ever used.  It's has never failed to feed, fire or eject, and although i haven't scoped it and put it on paper for groups, it appears to be quite accurate...

  There, now you have.

I installed a peep sight on my H001 Standard, and have been using it successfully for squirrel hunting for the last 3 years w/o issue.

It shoots right alongside my Winchester 9422M and Marlin 39a, but the Marlin IS the more accurate of the three leverguns - which make zero difference in these rifles, since they're all hunting, and not target, rifles.

I have a Henry .22, and I like it.  No, it's not a Marlin 39, but not every car is a BMW, either.

I was lucky enough a few years ago to get a 9422 in beautiful shape for very little money.  It is built like a watch and many other .22s seem cheap in comparison.  If they were still being made I know I couldn't afford one.  Got to get lucky once in a while.

My Henry 22 mag is very smooth, but I had to have it worked on for failure to extract cartridges. I believe they put in a stronger spring or something. Also, it shoots low. I will have to grind down the front sight to compensate.

I had a henry lever 22 and I liked it very much. it was very accurate and a great little carry gun. I never had any problems with feeding or ejecting from mine. If I got another lever 22 it'd probably be a henry 22 mag.

I installed a w/e adjustable Williams WM-96 Peep sight ($24), originally meant to replace the leaf of a military Mauser battle rear sight.

I drilled a hole through the front edge for a scope mount screw, then also D/T'd the top of the removable receiver cover for the single screw.

There's no side overhang, and it's low enough to readily zero using the issue front sight (I painted my front orange) - so no fooling around with changing the front sight.

I have a Henry .22 magnum pump [H003TM]. I like it very much.
It is very accurate. It doesn't seem to me to be cheaply made. It
certainly isn't cheaply priced. MSRP on my pump is $595.

I had heard the Henry pump 22WMR had problems, but i was determined to get one.  It took quite a while, but Anthony finally had one sent to my dealer, and i got my hands on it.  It misfired several times, and then went off and the action was "stuck", they have a really poor mechanical advantage to open and close the action.  Anyway, i forced the action open using a cleaning rod down the bbl., and tried again with new ammo.  It misfired some more, then fired and REALLY stuck.  I couldn't even open it with a cleaning rod.

After talking to Anthony, i send it back to Henry, where he (Anthony) didn't want to send me a new pump.  He as much as told me not to take a chance on another pump magnum, and told me i better think real hard on a lever.  Anyway, i ended up with a lever, and it's a great rifle.  Personally, after my experience, and talking to Anthony, i wouldn't recommend a Henry pump 22WMR to anyone.

I'm glad you like your's though...

Hmmmm...... no offense but I have to really wonder if you know anything about Henry rifles. I just bought my 10 year old a H001 .22 lever for Christmas. The sites are most definitely steel, not plastic and the action cycles as smoothly as my Marlin 39A. So I have to ask, how many Henry's do you own?

I like my H001, shoots great and is easier to pack around
than my 39A.

I love my Golden Boy .22LR!  It may not be my most accurate rifle, but it is accurate enough for hunting rabbits and tree rats, or plinking, and it may well be my most fun gun to shoot...  there is just something about a lever gun!
