Help Needed With Woodruff Gun
« on: August 23, 2010, 05:09:00 PM »
Having lurked for a while and developed an adiction, I'm considering a larger project. Thanks to finding a piece of 3" dia. 4140 cold rolled at an auction I now have a golf ball shooter that is great fun to shell the pasture with !!!!  ;)   However, it has sparked the need to go bigger and better.

I have been doing some looking on line at civil war artillery and have run across the Woodruff gun.The piece looks to be a "doable" size for my lathe,an old Cinncinati 18 X 72. The material should be found  with a little scrounging, I live in oil country lots of good sized "junk" of known alloys. The piece intrests me for a number of reasons, the least of which is it first saw action 99 years to the day before my birth ! (I think this is a sign, I need one  ;D )

My trouble is 1) other than the bore, 2 1/8", and the aproximate length of 3 feet I have no dimentions to work from. 2) Only 5 are known to exist,no one seems to know what the exactly what the carrage looked like.

Anyone have any info or know where to look for it?

WELCOME to the board!   It will be interesting to see what pops up for dimensions and drawings, maybe a few pix.

Okdirt,

I don't have any plans but have a picture of one I fabricated
in the 1990's for a group in the midwest.

If I recall, It was made to his sketches drawn from an origional piece.

Good luck with your project.

Welcome, Okdirt; you could contact the "West Point Museum," and inquire if anyone on past curatorial staffs has ever made measured drawings of the two Woodruff guns that they have in their collection.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

OKdirt,
You might try contacting the gentelman who runs this site.   http://home.earthlink.net/~turnerbrigade/woodruff.htm
Randy has built a couple and was kind enough to send drawings of the Filley guns.(also on his site).
The carriages must have been very light. One was repaired on Greison's raid with axle and wheel off a carriage(buggy).
