RIFLE BARRELS
« on: December 01, 2003, 03:18:52 PM »
Do you think a 20 inch thin barrel hurts a gun compared to 22 inch reg.barrel?
I enjoy collecting guns, swaping and staying up on all the newest models. I deer, quail, squirrel and rabbit hunt.

Billy-
Barrel length and weight doesn't make a good rifle or a bad rifle.  A lot depends on to what use the weapon is going to be put.  For most hunting in Missouri(and elsewhere I expect) a 20 inch barrel for a moderate and efficient caliber like the 7x57 Mauser is a great deer gun..  For shooting prairy dogs at extended ranges a heavier rifle in a flatter shooting caliber would be more appropriate.  The quality of the rifle is totally independant of the size of the barrel.

skinny barrels

hey billy! skinny barrels dont scare me much. they do tend to heat up quick, which dont make much difference when hunting. i shot a mod 7 remington for years. it had extremely short skinny barrel, never failed me yet. that float job ought to make your ruger shoot even better! let us know how it turns out!

Can't speak to thickness, but a cool article about barrel length here:
