Best pump for the Money?

You can get the mossberg Maverick 88 pump (economy 500) for under $200 at most places.   I payed $175 new for mine last fall.

  I bought a used 1980 870 mag wingmaster 12ga for $400 just a couple months ago.  it was in very good condition with no rust and the only blueing loss was a small area on the mag tube, but that happens anyway.  I think used is the way to go for most everything.  Prior to this i had a new express that just would not open after i fired.  I had to hold the forearm and slam the butt against the ground to get the shell to eject.  wont buy another new 870.

The best pump shotgun for the money is at the next garage sale, or the sale after that.  Mossberg 500's go for about $75 at garage sales here.  I bought an 870 Wingmaster 12 GA in the plastic case with tubes, etc. for $125.  It had been fired 3 times.  Last weekend a friend bought a $10 12 GA pump for me at a GS.  He handed it to me in the dark that night.  When I got it home it turned out to be a rusty but otherwise OK Winchester 97.  There was a Stevens 12 GA pump at the same GS that he missed that also sold for $10.

I know it's not a pump but I bought a very nice Winchester 37 at a GS, and I like the gun very much.

A well used but otherwise cared for 870 is my choice for a waterfowl gun.  It will still last a lifetime yet the next scratch or ding will not worry anyone.

The BPS is the best pump for the money.  It is the best pump for any money.  If you want the best pump for less than 300 most of these guys are right with the 870.  Swampy is right about Mossbergs being worth almost nothing.

The BPS is little more than a rem 17 or ithica 37 . they all drop empties in just the right place to trip ya . 870 hands down sales alone prove it !

OP already made his purchase, the 500 dumped a turkey already, that's all they do is make things dead. Sounds like there's a BPS in his future too. Good luck with both of them.

My rankings/commentary:

Old Model 12: Even if it's absolutely beat to shreds. If it functions safely, they are still a bargain. I know of a 16 for $250 that still has life left in it as a hunting gun.

Used 870 Wingmaster: No brainer. Value. Resale. Parts. Classic. Rudy Etchen. It's still decent despite big green's efforts to ruin it.

Used OLDER Ithaca 37: Never was a big fan, but they're well made. Cult-like following.  Not great for targets. Amazing value.

Bennelli Nova in 20ga: Absolute 100% bullet-proof modern machining and materials. These guns are outright SLEEPERS. Seriously, if they made the Nova in small gauges with wood, the Wingmaster, the BPS and the new Ithacas would be done, good night, park's closed.

Used Miroku BPS;  Sounds like you're getting one. Great. Enjoy.

Wow that's a great price for an 870. I've too been looking into a 20 for my son. I've been shooting the same 12 ga 870 for 25+ years and haven't done anything but oil it.  Great pump gun.

I have hunted or shot trap with 870's, Win model 12's and currently have a Mossberg 500A.  For the money, you really can't beat the Mossberg but the 870's are great as well. I ended up with the Mossberg because the shop that had it for sale also had an extra cantilevered, scoped rifled barrel for it.  It fit me well and shouldered well and for $240 I went for it.

Today Walmart had the NEF Pardner pumps for $156.00.  The hang tag said Remington Arms in large letters.......sad

The 870 Express Magnums were $250.00 but Remington has a big rebate on them right now.

I want to be second in line I will also take them $75 ones also.
I bought my 1 year old used 500 19 years ago. I have killed a mess of dove, pheasant, and couple truck loads of deer with it. I did have to tear it down and clean the enards a couple times
My daughter took her first deer with her Mossy 410, and my boy has claimed deer with his Mossy 20. I would like to own an 870 some day, but I will wait till I get my Mossberg broke in first
