12" 223?

Hello,

   Does the 12" barrel do justice to the 223?  I have heard the 10" is to short and the 14" is great so I was wondering how the 12" is.

I had a 12 inch in the encore and it shot well but I like my super 14 in contender much better.

I have 223 in a 10" and it is one of my favorite barrels, and most accurate.  That said however, I cannot say that it is pleasant for bystanders or neophite shooters.  My first hand loads for it and also factory loads provided much blast and flame that never failed to get comments at the gun range.  Quite a few years ago I took advise from someone on this board and started loading lighter bullets (35 and 40 grain) ahead of IMR-4198 and that really cut down on the fire and brimstone.

So far I have not been tempted to try it in a 14" barrel, mainly because I'm partial to the shorter tubes.  Also, I have 14" barrels in other calibers like 6mm TCU and 7-30 Waters to play with.  I'm sure that in a 12" or 14" barrel, the 223 is everything it is in a 10" and more.  It's a great caliber!

i have a 14" OAL 223 with a break shoots good but plugs and muffs a must

ditto.  pretty noisy but shoots accurately with 55 grain bullet and fast burning powder like BR 2015.  Ron Reed loaded me some of these for  my 12 inch barrel and I just need to remember to shoot it more often.

I have the 12" hunter barrel in .223.  It is as accurate as my 14".  Since it is ported, it is a lot louder, but I am wearing ear protection and don't notice.  Doesn't seem to bother my targets and is mild to shoot.

Accuracy itself wont change from a 10 inch to a 14 because of the barrel.
If you are useing iron sights, the longer sight radius will make the longer barrel seem more accurate.
Scoped guns, accuracy will be the same.
Its more important to match the barrel twist rate to the boolit head weight.
Now that makes a big difference.
