Questions on SKS
« on: January 22, 2004, 12:30:48 AM »
Hello forum members:

I have a couple of questions related to the SKS:

1. What is the best way you have found to carry the 10 round stripper clips? I do not like the across-the-chest chinese bandoleer I have seen advertised. I would prefer an ammo pouch.

2. How does an aftermarket 30 round magazine affix to the rifle? Does it just pop in? Does a pin have to be removed?

Thanks in advance,
gary

I don't carry stripper clips, but if I were to I would look at the various mil-surp belt bags available. Some of the old iron curtain imports are probably made for that sort of thing.

You have to remove the trigger assembly to change the magazine. There is a button befind the trigger. It takes a bit of force to seperate the assemby - the button is very hard to push.

I think the longer mags just get in the way. I would try to find out if it is legal to add it. There are lots of confusing and stupid laws dealing with the sks. Its not worth the risk of loosing everything for a magazine capacity change.

You have to put the safety on first then hit the button behind the trigger guard and it will pop apart.  You remove the fixed ten round mag and reinstall the trigger guard assembly.  Then put in the new mag it may go in or may need fitting on the front tang. But most do go right in.

Hello...

OK guys.  That answers my questions.  Large capacity magazine installation is a little more involved than I first thought.  I am not sure I want to go that route anyway.  I like the 10 round strippers but want to find a decent ammo pouch.  I suspect too that some Eastern European ammo pouch made for the SKS would be the route to go.  I spied something in a Sportsman's Guide catalogue the other day - it was a dual leather ammo pouch, quite tall, and obviously made for a number of 10 round clips.  Unfortunately it was listed as available with alot of other stuff (ie. tools, oil bottle, etc) that I don't reallly need.  Maybe I'll just get them to see if they are any good - guess I have to buy the other accessories to get to ammo pouches.   I tried to jury rig bandoleers using a Turkish Mauser ammo bandoleer, but it did not work well.
Cheers,
Gary
