RIG Grease for Long Storage?
« on: October 14, 2010, 12:46:32 AM »
I'm thinking about getting some RIG grease for some guns I have with no intention of shooting or selling over the next 5+yrs. I have been going over them 1 or 2 times a year with an oil patch & a wipedown. That's working O.K. but maybe I could set them up for longer storage, mostly in my fairly dry safe. Has anyone used this or another long term grease, or another product? Is it worth it over somewhat regular care? Thanks.

I have a little experience.  I'm in the AF and just spent five years in Germany.  Left all my guns in the US.  My in-laws lived in KY.  I left them all in a safe with a dehumidifier in it.  My safe was in their garage.  We built a wooden cabinet around it from floor to ceiling to protect the safe from scratches and abuse.  The garage was open every day.  There was no air conditioning, heating or any kind of climate control  About every 18-24 months either my wife or I were back in the US and we would open the safe, check the guns and wipe them down with a rag that was sprayed with rem-oil.  I just picked them up about 3 weeks ago and moved them to my new place in Texas.  I found no rust or problems of any kind with them.  I was relieved and a little surprised.  I expected to have some rust on a few of them.  You can do what you feel is necessary but this is the second time I've put mine in long term storage.  Once for three years and once for five.  Haven't had any problems.  With a safe that is in a house and a dehumidifier, I don't think you'll have a problem as long as once every year or so you dig them out of the back of the safe and give them a once over and wipe them down with oil.  If the safe is not in a climate controlled area you will probably still be okay but may want to do your maintenance a little more often or add some dessicant bags in your safe.

Good Luck,

I was out a little today & a local shop had some RIG, so I got some to try. It's about like I would expect, light, clean grease, much more so than the stuff you do your truck with. I'll find some use for it. The next time I have a longer term storage gun in my hands I'll try a little, maybe even tag it with the date it was 'rigged'.

I stored a few guns in a wet enviroment for a while, not 5 years but 2.
What I did was get some T-9 Boeshield spray wax.  Cans are about $15 at the Boat US or West marine stores.
hose down the guns.   Let the oily wax dry.
The spray wax is designed for the leading edge of a plane to keep it from icing.
I stuck the guns in the vaccume seal bags.  Did not have a vaccume sealer but used the heavy plastic and sealed the ends as best as I could.   If you have a vaccume sealer just hit with a light coat of the T-9 and seal the guns.  I stuck them in a Plastic  airline case with out the foam lining (it gathers moiusture) and added a small dehumidifier and stuck the guns in a storage garage in Norfolk VA.  Wet winters and springs and hot humid summers.
The Spray wax works verry well and is easy to clean up when you take them out of storage.
Spray a little on a clean rag and wipe off excess.

Ya know, I kept saying that I was gonna buy some of those silicon bags and put all my guns in them with a dessicant bag.  I never got around to it because every time we checked on the guns, there wasn't anything wrong!  I thought about using a heavier oil/grease but never did.  Many of mine are stainless or parkerized.  I really only have one that has any rust on it and that was there when I bought it from a buddy.  I have a dehumidifier.  It's not a GoldenRod but another brand like that.  Really just a small heating element.  It's been running since 2004 when I bought the safe.  I just verified that it still works about a week ago.  Probably about time to by another just in case.

I've about 60-100 guns in the vault and use 'RustPrevent' exclusively. I believe it's a RIG product but I'm not sure.. Just spray it on and wipe away the excess. Lasts a very long time and won't rub off but is easily removed with nearly any petroleum based solvent..
