FLU SHOTS.
« on: September 13, 2010, 11:36:44 AM »
My wife wanted us to get the shot early, they are a combination of 3 different viruses this year. My doc had wanted me to get the pneumomia shot for years but I never did. The flu shots are not available anywhere but kroger so far and they were $25. I asked about the pneumonia shot and they said it was $70 this year, $45 last year, I said no way. We stopped by the county health dept and I got the pneumonia shot there for $10, YEP TEN BUCKS. Kroger is really soaking insurance companies it seems. POWDERMAN.   >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

I'm considered a high risk patient and I get mine free at the village senior center every year. We are the first to get them after all the clinic employes..

Free is a good price...........right  ;D

I know alot of people don't like the shot for varies reasons.
But I'm a believer in them.
I work at an area school where students come in from all over.
If there's a bug it comes thru our doors.
I've been taking the flu shot for over 15 years and I've only had the flu once.
There was a strain that showed up that wasn't predicted and that's the one that got me.

I won't take one. If I were high risk,I would consider it. Mis-prescribed medicine is a high risk also.

Got my whooping cough last week at a free clinic advertised in the newspaper.  My doctor’s office was being a stinker about it saying Medicare Part B, and my Blue Cross Insurance would not pay for it.  But the kicker was that because of my age I did not need it.  At times I get a little PO at them.  The fact that I have a great grandson who is a couple months old, and a two year old great granddaughter who I do not want to expose is the reason I want the shot.

They were all set up at the three tables inside giving the shot.  Out in the hall I had to fill out some paper work.  The kicker is that I had to answer two real tough questions, how did I learn about the clinic and did have children in the local school district.  Easy, I read about it in the local paper, and no I do not have children in the local schools, but I do have grandchildren in the schools.

Paperwork asked when I had a DPT shot and I put 1995.  I remember I got one before I went to Mexico.  Rust holds that country together.

Normally the medically group we belong too runs a shot clinic for the flu shots.

Middle brother first got pneumonia back in the Marine Corp in the sixties.  He has had it two or three times since.  I first nagged him into a pneumonia shot about five years ago and he has been clear of pneumonia.

The wife and I are exposed to young grandkids, great grandkids, and their friends that we would be foolish not to get a shot.

There are some very good Indian Health Clinics in Northern California.  At times they advertise shot clinics open to the general public.  The last flu shot I got there cost $10 and it was a pleasant experience.

I've taken the flu shot since open heart in 2003. Last year neither my wife or myself even had a sniffle, but lots of other folks did. I didn't get the swine flu shot last year, doc said it was risky and not necessary. Biggest reason I didn't get it was cause osama said it was necessary, all he was doing was trying to plug his idiotic health care bill. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

I'm also a high risk patient, and have been taking it every year, but I'm kinda leary this year since I've been hearing it contains the swine flu anti-dote too.   Do y'all think it's safe ?

I felt ok with it this year, they surely have it right by now. I refused it last year cause the news media and osama were pushing it so hard. I still say it was pushed so hard to make osamas hc farce look good, as if anything could. I've never had a sore arm from a shot before but I got them both in my left arm. When I got the pneumonia shot the nurse said she was really having to push the needle in because the muscle was hard, my left arm is really sore, I can barely lift it. Hope tomorrow is better.  POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Getting a flu shot is not a tough decision for me.  I think about the risk but the cousins got together a few years back in Michigan on my Dad’s side of the family.  We visit court house, museums, and cemeteries.

The family suffered a lot of deaths in 1918 from the influenza.  My great grandfather lost a number of his children.  And extended family members were lost.  A little bit shocking because he was country doctor, but medicine was not as it is today.  I remember looking at the headstones of his twin daughters who never reached their teens.  His eldest child had returned from WWI having fought in France.  Did he and other returning veterans carry the flu home with them?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_flu

I do not have the same kind of information on my mother’s family in Alabama.  Mom never mentioned flu deaths in her large family.

The Hong Kong flu hit my young household hard.  All of us were sick over Christmas 1968.  The wife, the baby, and I were very sick.  The turkey stayed in the freezer and we eat can food.  We were down close to two weeks.  I returned to work, fought a winter fire, and we were all down for another two weeks.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hong_Kong_flu

A few years later we had two young ones, and we got hit by the flu.  Another Christmas dinner was missed.  The only good thing about it was when the wife was down I was up, and when it hit me she was better.
A good reminder why we will get flu shots soon.  We have not been sick during the winter since getting flu shots; I do have the urge to cluck like a chicken after the shot.

Our County Health Department will not be giving free flu shots to anyone under 65.  Guess I will just go to Walgreen's and get one for $20.

Ouch !  Sounds like a dull needle.  I can't see a good sharp needle bruising the muscle like that.  JMTC

I highly recommend getting both the flu and the pneunomia , I haven’t missed getting a flu shot for well over 35 years and started the pneunomia about 8-10 years ago, I think it only has to be give every five years…They work!.

I will have to put it on “hold” this year due to my recent radiation treatment and Chemo.  That means I am in a very high risk situation due to cancer treatments.

They give the regular flu shots at work for $10, which I always go ahead and take advantage of.  Last year with the whole swine flue thing that was going on we got a small shipment of free vaccines for "essential personnel", which they put me into because I'm the IT department's liaison to the Emergency Preparedness Department (during a hurricane or other disaster I go into the Emergency Center to make sure their computers stay up and working).

Haven't ever gotten the pneumonia shot.  Truth be told I didn't even know it existed until reading this.  Might consider it this year.

Seems most places though if you look around you can get the shot for pretty cheap.  The $10 flu shot I mentioned above is done through the County Health Department and is available to regular citizens too - they just bring the nurse over to the admin building for a day to administer to employees who want it.  It's everyone's personal decision, but IMHO it's mighty cheap insurance against getting sick with the flu.

Instead of giving the shot below the other shot she went above, right into the joint. Still pretty sore today. I might put off digging potatoes another day. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

I'll take my chances with the flu!  The potential side effects from those vaccines are WAY worse than the flu.  The flu can be cured with almost harmless antibiotics.  The damage those shots can do to your brain is irreversible!

FOURBEE. Might be partly my fault. She asked if I got the swine flu shot last year and I said no. When she asked why I said cause obama said I had to so I figured it must be bad cause he said it, like everything else he says or does. She was black and seemed real nice. My fault I reckon. I'll finish dgging anyway. POWDERMAN.  :D :D

Well, this year will be my last mandatory flu shot.  After 01 July 2011 I get to be an adult and make my own health care decision.  Not that I won't get a shot... Just that I won't be MADE to get the shot.

Flu shots are $25.00 at "the" Pharmacy in Beaumont. Pnemonia shots are $50.00 You need 2 pnemonia shots in your lifetime, not closer than 5 years apart. I am high risk so I get a flu every year I'll get a pnemonia shot(#2) sometime in the next year.

The flu can be cured with almost harmless antibiotics.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the flu is a viral infection.  Antibiotics are only useful against bacterial infections and have no effect whosoever on the flu (or any viral disease).  If you get the flu your only path to recovery is to let the body fight if off naturally (which in virtually all cases it will do just fine - you're just going to have an unpleasant time while it takes care of it - there are some medicines to help with the symptoms though).
