AK 47 's in full autofire

Recalling some news footage after Saddam's capture, I saw Iraqies celebrating by firing their AK47's into the air.  One celebrant with the camera watching pulled back the bolt on his AK and fired away till the bolt slammed closed.  He then pulled the bolt back once more to repeat a second blast.

Is that how the AK47 operates on full or semi-automatic.....???  I just assumed that it would fire continually till it emptied the magazine or you released the trigger.  Dumb question perhaps, but I've never witnessed  full autofire except in the movies! :blaster:  Are these the same AK47's sold in America?

I think it either jammed or didn't chamber the next round? Maybe its too long between cleaning?? Or lack of cleaning too. Any gun can only take so much abuse before it malfunctions.  It being an AK I can only imagine how long it hasn't been cleaned?  Full auto is rock n roll till the mag is empty.                              BigBill
