New rear sight on 45-70 pics added
« on: September 01, 2010, 02:41:57 AM »
I have a 45-70 Handi that I have been doing work on to make it look old-fashioned. I cut off the pistol grip to make a straight buttstock. Scraped off the finish and left it a natural blond. I cut off the trigger guard and installed a brass Kentucky type one. I replaced the butt pad with an old H&R shotgun hard rubber one. I finally found a more traditional rear sight. I bought one on E-bay ; it was listed as a "vintage Remington" rear sight. It is a screw-mounted ramp with a slide elevator.
I got to test it Sunday. Shooting offhand or with a "field rest" on a fence, I was able to hit a moderate sized buffalo silouette at 100-110 yards and group the hits well in the middle of the target by removing the elevator slide altogether. I think it should do well at longer ranges with the elevator.
I was using a 450 grain cast bullet over 24 grains of IMR 4198. I did shoot some other loads amy brother-in-law loaned me that we quite a bit hotter and faster; accuracy was no better. I prefer moderate loads so I can shoot more without bruising!

Here are a couple of pictures of my work so far. The brass still needas more polishing and buffing.

The .45-70 is one of those great cartridges that can be loaded to very light loads or very heavy depending on the action. In a rifle like the #1 it can be loaded heavier than you probably want to shoot it.
Even at trapdoor levels it's a great hunting cartridge & those levels are where it made it's reputation. You are going to like it.

Try that bullet with 12-14 gr. of Unique for easy, cheap, fun shooting. Just remember to tip the barrel upwards after chambering to settle the powder back against the primer (I do NOT recommend 'tufts of wadding' to hold the powder back, too much evidence of ringed chambers now), lower to sight and shoot.
This technique will keep your velocities as stable as possible compared to random powder positioning.

Will get pics soon, I hope.
I have tried 10 grains of Unique. Nice for short range plinking.
