Just what can you do...

With a NEF Pardner in 20 ga with a 22" barrel and a fixed modified choke?

I've shot skeet with it for awhile now, so I know its pretty good for that.  But I'd like to get into hunting and was wondering just what my little shotgun can do.  I'm in Far West Texas and frequently go into the Trans-Pecos area.

I've heard that they are great for light dove and quail hunting, but usually aren't recommended for duck or larger.  What would be my practical limitations with this shotgun? What would you recommend it for?

Well up here in New York we don't have dove season,but do have quail. It is also a great squirl and rabbit gun. It also throws foster slugs well enough to hunt deer with. Mine is kind of my do all 20ga.

the 22 inch barrels are worthless. I will take it off your hands just to save you the trouble ::)

well let me see what id do with it,

Hunt dove, pheasant, grouse, partridge, quail. rabbit, squirrel, ducks, hmmmm sounds about right, for now.

pattern that thing, find a good load for the game your after and have at it, 20ga is fine for dang near everything, Id stay away from geese only due to the steel shot, big birds + crappy shot = no fun.  If i found a good nontox shot that pattern well Heck id give it a try, make sure you know the pattern and range and your good!

Or you can have the best of both worlds and pick up a lightly used 12 gauge barrel off the classifieds for your handi and then you can cover all the bases!

Try some different brands of foster type slugs.You may find the modified choke quite accurate with one brand but not another.It could be just what your looking for, for up close deer and hogs.

A MOD choke 20 is good for just about anything as long as you figure out what it's range limitations are with different loads.

I just traded manatee for a 22" 20ga and I LOVE it.  Whole gun weighs only a little over 5 lb and is easy to maneuver through the woods.  When my hands are full, I just sling it over my back and forget its there.  Almost never hangs up on brush or briars.  This is now the gun I carry when I'm working or just bumming around in the woods.  I use it for squirrel, dove, and rabbit, and with Rem or Winchester slugs I should be able to hit deer and stray dogs broadside at 50 yards.  (For some reason, it won't shoot Federal Truballs worth a darn.)  It also does miscellaneous skunk/possum/varmint duty.  I'll probably stick to my 12ga for turkeys, and I don't hunt waterfowl.  I'll still use my 44mag when I'm specifically deer hunting, for the added range, increased confidence in shot placement, and because a scope is just easier for my eyes anymore.  But for everyday use, my little 20 is a great all-around gun that doesn't get in the way.

thats weird, mine loves federal tru-bal, and so does my father-in-laws 26 incher.  one thing everyone else forgot to mention is the fact that it'll fit just about anywhere in a truck or on a tractor.

  Just a point to consider-- back when America was wilderness and the fur trade was in full swing the trade guns  traded to the native Americans were a musket of approximately 20 gauge, these were cylinder bore black powder  that were used for everything from warfare to bison, moose, waterfowl and whatever needed shooting. Worked then and if loaded and used properly the modern equivalent will still work today --woodsrunner

Honestly, a lot of guys here are stating great luck using the Hornady SST sabot slugs.  They seem to hold groups well as far as 75 yards from this type of gun.  They are a little pricier, but if you pick up 2 boxes and start shooting at 75 yards and they do ok, you shouldn't need to test at 50 or 25.  That'd leave you 7 slugs which should be plenty for at least 3 or 4 deer. ;)

Tacklebury he is talking about a 22" smooth bore modified choke pardner barrel the SSts would just tumble cause they are rear end heavy.

Tracker or tracker 1=smooth bore. Tracker 2 =rifled bore.
