Range-Rod Make it or Purchase it????
« on: December 13, 2003, 08:23:20 AM »
Hi!
I've asked before.....Is there a good, strong Range-Rod with muzzle guard available for purchase or can I make one easily?  I don't have a lathe. I see the front-stuffers at the club using what looks like a nylon (floopy) rod with an attached muzzle guard and wondered where they come from???
Thanks for the help!

Actually, they are VERY abrasive due to the dust and grit particles that becomes imbedded in the softer material. You should always use a muzzle-guard when practiical.

As an inliner I reckon I CAN at least still post here??

http://www.cainsoutdoor.com/cart/asp/item_index.asp has a good selection of rods and rod accessories.  I like their Hunter Super Rod in 7/16 diameter.

DeweyRods.com also sells some great coated steel rods with bore guides.  I've got a couple of them that have lasted many years and still going strong.
WHUT?

GB,
Just a damn shame 'bout all this traditional/in-line hard feelins'.  Can't understand it and shure don't want to either.  I left one forum cause of all the bickering over who was the latest self-appointed Grand Puppa Know-it-All.  Amen.

I use a stainless steel rod I got from DGW, with all the attachments for .32-thru .54, it also has a muzzle guide/protector and a large plastic ball on the end to make seating the ball or bullet much easier. This is primarily my range rod, which I highly recommend for repeated shooting such as at a range, or as you leave the hunting cabin, or your vehicle early in the morn to start your hunt. During the hunt I use a glass rod, contained in the thimbles, but haven't had to use it for a follow up shot as of yet. Tried a few times to make sure it works, and that's it. I also heard that the glass or fiber glass rods are not recommended due to flexing and imbedding abrasives in the lands and grooves of a rifle, and eventually affecting accuracy. Any scientific evidence to that? RR :D

River runner,.... Ther was a demostration done years ago to show how abrasive a fiberglass ramrod was to a barrel. If I remember correctly, they fastened a fiberglass ramrod in place of a hacksaw-blade on an electric-hacksaw, and started move'n the fiberglass ramrod across a muzzleloader barrel. The results were thet the fiberglass-ramrod eventually cut completely thru the barrel (I think the results would have ben "less dramatic" had they used a metal or synthetic ramrod).

Actually I made my own.  Took a T/C rugged rod, aluminum, and made a lead filled handle.  Use the standard brass bore guide with it.

On the handle I cut off a short length of one inch copper tubing, poured a little melted lead in the bottom then set the end of the rod in the tubing and poured hot lead around it.

When it cooled took a soft rubber handlebar grip for a childrens bicycle that is available at Walmart and slipped that over the handle.

In a short while of use the rod will come loose from the lead, so I just coated that section of the rod with epoxy cement and set it back into the handle.

With the weight of the lead it is a joy to use and requires no effort.  The aluminum rod cleans off really well and does not seem to hold any grit.

I found a 50 cal machine gun cleaning rod.  I rethreaded the tip to 10/32.
The weight of the rod helps to make sure that I never stick a ball.  I have used the same rod for 20 years and it looks the same as the day I bought it. Black and ugly - but it sure does work.

I also made my own after breaking off two wood ones.  It's made from an aluminum sectioned shotgun rod.  But, if you can't access a lathe...  I've not noticed any fall-off in accuracy after many thousands of rounds.  In fact, both my rifles seem to be more accurate than when I bought 'em back in the early 80's.  The GPR has definitely improved from the ticking patches giving the bore a fine polish.
