45 LC to 460 S&W?
« on: September 01, 2010, 05:23:56 AM »
Are there any problems in converting a 45 LC Handi to 460 S&W? Is there a reamer program on GB similar to the .357 max rental.

Tim's done it, and I'm sure will be here soon to tell you about it.  As far as I know, we don't have a reamer.

4D has the reamer, easy to do by hand, just takes a lot longer than doing a 357Max.

OK so the frame must be an SB-2 to handle the  pressure of the 460. If I am correct then .45  long colt, 454 casull, also could still be fired in the same chamber. Does the 45 long colt suffer in accuracy when it makes the jump to the rifling or does it shoot pretty accurately? This would seem to me to be as versatile a conversion as the .357 max being able to shoot 3 different cartridges.

I assume you can rechamber the 45 Colt carbine to 460 also? Or just the long barrel? Shouldn't make any difference I would think.

Long barrel? There's only one length 45 Colt H&R, the BC Carbine is 20", the 45/410 Survivor is 20" also.  ;)

If you're referring to the 22" 45LC barrel on the acc barrel list, that's a typo, it's 20" long, there is no 45LC Handi, just the BC Carbine if that's confusing anyone.

The BC barrel is 32" long.  I have one and that could be the model in the accessory page you saw.  8)

That would be a mighty loose fit to use .452" bullets in a 45-70, I've checked 5 of my 6 45-70 H&R barrels, .452" bullets drop right thru most of them, the others drop in part way and stop mid bore.  ;D

Yeah, same for Ruger #3 too: I had both (NEF and RUGER) and had some Lyman .451 "Volunteer" bullets; 450 gr, as i recall. i bought a bunch from a fellow for experimenting in very heavy 45 colt shooting and also for paper patch in the 45/70. I eventually started patching just the base and seating the bullet way out. The patch sealed the base and the rest of the bullet acted as a bore-rider. Allowed for full use of the 45/70.

Definitely not a 45 Colt, tho.
