One of our fifty is missing
« on: September 05, 2010, 05:03:00 PM »
Every month the New Mexico Magazine has a one page feature with this title. It is about problems people have with others in the US understanding that New Mexico isn't a foreign country. Mostly it involves getting something shipped to the state. Mostly it involves the northern part of the US and especially the east coast not knowing we are a state. There are some funny stories about people's experiences. I have never had this problem until this afternoon. My son-in-law recently purchased a Henry Goldenboy in .17 HMR and decided he needs something better than the iron sights. I told him Henry has a scope mount for it and we looked it up on Henry's website. When he clicked to order it he got this message "We are sorry but we cannot ship orders to Canada or other areas outside of the United States". Tried it three times and that came up every time. He's going to call them Tuesday and see if he can convince them that New Mexico is indeed in the US and get a scope mount.

When I was still gainfully employed United Health Care provided our medical insurance and for years I had a problem almost as annoying. Every year we would get a book with the doctors for our area listed. Since the area code for NM was the same for the whole state then and they went by area code all the doctors with a contract with them were in the Albuquerque-Santa Fe area. I would call and explain that I didn't live there. It was nearly a 300 mile trip up there. I would ask for a directory for the Midland, TX area since that was much closer and my wife's cardiologist is located there.  The United offices were in White Plains, NY and they didn't have a clue where I was talking about even with the zip code and area code. I would get "Is it close to Lubbock? No it is south of Lubbock. Is it close to El Paso? No, it's nearly 300 miles east of there. How about Dallas? Is it close to there? No, you are close to 300 miles too far east." Eventually they would get it straightened out and I would get the correct directory. The next year it was the same old thing until the company I worked for switched insurance companies and we quit getting anything.

Maybe our education system is failing in teaching the majority of our children, other than photography, art & crafts, and sports.

Ya know FourBee I think you have hit the nail one the head. Our schools are teaching out kids to be artists, atheletes and managers. We do need some workers too.

I'd be happy if they just gave a classical education and apprenticeships, then they'd both know New Mexico is a state, how to vote for stronger borders, and how to build a fence.

Amazing and you're in the "continental USA"  too.  I know how you feel as I live in Alaska. By now most of the country knows we're a state but there are a lot of businesses that don't know how or flat WON'T mail stuff to us - especially in our more remote areas. So many back east can't conceive that a state can be so big and that we cannot drive to every community - that flying is really the only way. Good luck. Its amazing that those companies don't have New Mex info loaded into their shipping software.

I do have to hand it to Cabela's, Midway, LL Bean. They mail stuff to me at a modest price and it often arrives in only 3-4 days! Takes that long for a letter to get processed in town - and we all send/get our mail at one post office - no home delivery.

Yep.. spot on ...US kids fail miserably in Geography and Math.
Had a little girl at the cash register a while back ... her registers electronic LED went out and since it couldn't tell her how much to give back to the patrons, the line got longer and longer cause she couldn't make change appropriately. I think my wife handed her 5.06 or something like that so she could give my wife an even 50 cents back ...totally threw the little girl for a loop.

Heard from my buddy the school his daughter is going too makes it mandatory the kids have calculators.. I remember when we were not allowed to have them in the classrooms. It was not only important for the teacher to see you got the right answer buy they wanted to see the work on how you arrived at the answer you determined.

According to our freaking president, there are seven other states that need to be recognized too.  There's no telling where the hell they might be.

Nope, nope, nope.   Ten more.  He said he had been to 57 with one left to go, not counting Alaska and Hawaii.  So he thinks there are 60 states.  Must be that 20% grave yard vote he got used to as part of the Chicago Democratic Machine.
