Tree Rats & a Trapper
« on: August 31, 2010, 05:04:27 AM »
Tomorrow is opening day for doves, geese & squirrels in Ohio.  Was planning on birds but the farm I hunt on isn't ready yet, nothing has been harvested.  Probably next week for the birds, no big deal because my friend and I are the only ones hunting there so no pressure till we show up, and with the way I shoot no pressure when I show up. ::)

So tomorrow it will be time to chase some bushy tails.  Thanks to Gendoc, my 357 Max trapper is all dressed up for opening day.

I sure hope you're shooting a reduced load in that Maxi. ;D I saw a rabbit that was recently shot with a Maxi, not a pretty sight. :o Totally disembowled. In fact, the only organ left inside it's body was it's brain.

I bet that rabbit won't be eating anymore young ornamental treebark..... ;)

Thanks, Dinny

I sure wish we could use something besides a rimfire here for tree rats.  Legal weapons are a rimfire, or shotgun with 4 shot or smaller.  It would just be fun to take the 357 with some 38's :D

Best of luck in your hunting....

That .357 ought to tear them up pretty good,  should be fun!  several years ago before my brother and i went our seperate ways to the military we did one last squirrel hunt with an m1 garand and a mosin nagant, now that was messy.  Not much cleaning to do though.

Bunnies, Pats and tree rats open here in two weeks, the 15th.  I've got light .38s loaded for the shortie maxi.  It should be fun.

A Garand and Mosin, probably enough round for a Tree Rat Double Tap. ;D

Hunt this morning was nice but no bushy tails.  Very little rain here for the last couple of months and absolutely no acorns where I was hunting.  No squirrels, no turkey, no deer, just a couple tweety birds.  Time for Plan "B", my friend's horse farm.  Good morning to walk around so no complaints on my end.

Pete, I'll bite, what's a "Pat"?

I shot a young groundhog this spring with my .357 maxi using 180 xtp @2200fps. Couldn't really tell what it was after that!!  Most of its upper half was missing. Not pretty but it was impressive..

I got one last year at about 50 feet with the exact same load and identical results.  I also got one with the .45-70 and a Hornady LE at 80 yards.  That one looked like it was born without a head.

Thats too bad about the g-hog, young to middlin' ones are good eating, and more to them than squirrels.

I give the dead Chucks to the Yote family that lives in the woods 400 yards behind my house.  They send me a Christmas card every year. ;D

The tree rats are for our wild game dinner, but the dish is going to be vege this year if I can't find a woods with some acorns. :P

went out at 9AM to freshen up a scrape for archery season and took the Maxi.  Saw a couple of the lil' Red Squirrels but ignored them, too small for the trouble of cleanin' plus they make me feel bad because I usually miss them. >:(  Saw a big Fox squirrel walking back to the truck, heart/lung shot at 35 yards with 180 grn HP/XTP.  In case anyone was wondering, 19 grains of H110 is enough for a pass thur. ::) Man I wish I could use my Maxi for deer, maybe next year in Indiana.  Like Pete, Dinny and everyone else says, the Handi Maxi is a very accurate gun.
