First barrel fitting
« on: September 06, 2010, 11:45:53 AM »
Gents - I have successfully fit my first barrel.  I want to thank all the great people on this board for all the knowledge that is shared.  Without this board, I would never have tried something like this.  It locks up tight on a piece of aluminum foil that measured .0005", with nice latch engagement.

I shot the gun yesterday, and after about a dozen or so rounds, my groups started to tighten up, and so far I have shot a 1", three shot group at 100 yards.  My 11 year old shot one shot through it, and hit about 3/8" below dead center.

Thanks again.

Tim

Sounds like you got a shooter there. What caliber is it?
You got any pics of the finished rifle?
You know we need more info. :D :D

Sorry - It's a .243, standard contour.  Don't have any photos yet, but I'll try to get some.  Rifle started out life as a .308 Survivor.  The survivor stock is not my cup of tea, so I traded it here for a wood stock with the schnable forend.

Here are a couple pictures (at least I'll try to attach them).

I also put a Redfield 3-9x40 on it, using Weaver Grand Slam rings.  I pulled the scope base off the barrel, wrapped sandpaper around the barrel and sanded the bottom of the base to closer match the barrel contour.  I then used blue Loctite on the screws and between the barrel and the base to sort of bed the base (I also did this on the .308 barrel that came on the receiver).

A while back I also did a trigger job on this receiver, getting the trigger down to about 3-1/4 pounds.

Again, none of these mods would have happened without all the expertise on this board.

Thanks.

That's a nice setup.
I've got the same scope on my 22-250 Stevens and I love it.
I still haven't tackled a trigger job yet... I'm worried about getting all the pieces back in after I get 'em out. :D

Spanky - The trigger job was not too bad.  Before I did mine, I printed out the instructions fromt he FAQ's, and read them a few times over the course of a couple days.  I am pretty good at getting the parts in and out now, as I had mine apart about 20 times, as I didn't want to take too much material off at one time.

It came out so nice, that I did a trigger job on my son's Rossi single shot .22.  It is essentially the same as a Handi (a bit rougher).  I only smoothed out his trigger, I didn't lighten it much, if any.

If you use the slave pin as called out in the instructions, it goes pretty easy.

Thanks.
