Hilly Wooded Land For Turkey Hunting?
« on: July 04, 2010, 03:24:56 PM »
Have any of you ever turkey hunted in wooded hilly land, or
is it better to hunt them on level land with plenty of food
and cover?

Thanks,

It's fun, but hard, to hunt turkeys in big woods.  I've killed a few over the years in the woods, mostly when I lived in southern Missouri and hunted the Ozarks.  You have to be more patient and wait for them to come to you... it is too noisy and there's not much good cover to move... also, it can be hard to know where they are and where they are going.

The last woods turkey I killed was two years ago in some big river bottom timber in Kansas.  It was an afternoon hunt and I just scratched very softly on my slate and scratched leaves with my hands.  He came in silent and looking, but not strutting.

I hunt them where i find them . here there is both flat and rolling hills . We listen then go to them sometimes its a field edge other times its big woods . A field can be easier but if mr tom ain't there.....................

Around here the old Toms like the woods and hills early in the season. Before the vegetation grows up and the trees leaf out, the only cover they have is the woods. From the top of a hill before the trees leaf out they can see forever and only have to run over the edge to keep from being seen. Once the trees leaf out and the undergrowth thickens, they tend to shy away from the woods after flydown and stick to the middle of open fields. Heavy vegetation makes it too easy for the 'yotes(and hunters) to sneak up on 'em. Stayin' out in the middle of a open field keeps 'em outta shotgun range and gives them a chance to outrun or fly away from  any 'yote/fox that wants a turkey dinner.
