I've decided! No Handi's will hunt this year...
« on: September 07, 2010, 08:06:23 AM »
I have had a heck ofa time getting to the range this year to work up loads for all my new Handi's... and some of my old ones!   :(   And without shooting them I don't have a starting point to see if there are any tinkerin' that needs to be done ...  :(

So my 280 and 45 Colt and 25-06 and 7x57 and 45-120 will all have to wait till next year to kill their first deer.   :(  I hope I haven't forgotten anyone...  :-\

Nope, for ease of getting ready for season to open next month the leverguns have won the toss this year.  4 of then anyway... and my Ruger Bisley SBH Hunter!   ;D

But I've promised my Handi's that, as soon as deer season is over in January, they will have an exclusive on range time, new/refinished furniture and new/different sights.  Not to mention that the 2011 season will be for them alone!   :D

Sorry to hear that Richard, I haven't hunted with a non-H&R for many years.  :-*

I hate that for ya Richard!  ::)  but somehow I feel you will do just fine!  ;)

They do get their feelings hurt when you ignore them too much! I have a 270 barrel that wont come out of the safe right now!

Well, I am sure that's a disappointment for you, but a wise choice as I know you wouldn't want to hunt with a rifle that you couldn't totally trust. Shows admirable ethics.

Going to the range tonight after work to make sure the Handi 30/30 is ready for antelope hunting this weekend. Back up will be a lever.

I never have to tinker.  I just sight the scope in with Remington factory ammo and I'm done.

If you spend too much time out there with that Puma 92 you may never want to use another one of those single shot rifles again.  Those 92's are addictive.

This will be the first season in a very long time I won't be taking a 308 win to deer camp. The 45-70 manlicher needs to get bloody. I understand your reasoning atlaw if you can't shoot with confidence then don't shoot.

Pick one, make your best load and sight it 2" high at 50yd. and youre good to 100 for deer. Shouldnt take more than 1/2hr. Most deer are taken at less than 100 anyway.

Mine will! I plan on drawing blood with the 30-30 and 22 Hornet Toppers.

I think I would just buy a box of Remington 45 Colt and Federal Fusion 25-06 and sight in and go hunting, but I respect you for wanting to develop your own loads and wanting to practice with them.

Happy hunting with your levers -- my Win 94 will be out there opening morning.

After a long time with no shooting of anything I did grab the 45-70 (Handi) and fired one round in the back yard :D

This one round was loaded with those cute 150 gr button bullets and an unweighted amount of TB using the Fill to the bottom of a seated bullet method.

The results for the un-antlered deer draw will be available this Saturday which decides for me if I'm doing any hunting here at all.

Richard, Have you reconsidered? I think I hear your 45/120 crying itself to sleep. -g

I hunted with my .41 caliber Marlin 1894FG last year during regular firearms season and my sons used the Handi's in .44 & .357 mag. Then during muzzleloader season I always grab the Huntsman to hunt with. This year will use the 500 S&W Handi to get after the whitetails. I switch between the rifles from year to year and even use a few of my large caliber revolvers also. I use the Handi's most of all anyway, but like to change it up once in a while.....

True, I do like mine.  Matter of fact that one you talked me into getting will be first outa the gate this season!   ;D

I think I hear your 45/120 crying itself to sleep.

Not really reconsidered, but I've got some mild (405 gr. @ 2000 fps) 45-120 loads ready so I told her if the oportunity arises...  ;)

'sides... I just added a 30-30 barrel to the stable so next years Handi season is gettin mighty crowded.  I might have to work a couple in this year...  :-\  Sure glad we have a 12 deer limit!   :D

Mine are all Handi seasons.  The .45-70 for bear and the .445 and Maxis for deer.  I might give the 7mm-08 an airing too.

We have a tag system here in N.Y. last season between me and the kid we had 11 tags and filled 8 of them. That was a pretty good season around here.
