Mossberg 500, how to remove "duck" plug?
« on: December 04, 2003, 03:37:01 PM »
I made this same post in "Gunsmithing" forum; if someone answers one place, not necessary to answer again.

Help! My newly purchased used 500A has the "duck" plug in place. How do I get the magazine tube end off to remove spring and plug? There is a 1/8 in wide end that I thought screwed off. It turns, not easily, with pliers, but does not seem to unscrew. Thanks a lot, I need this plug out to go deer hunting.

Make sure the gun is unloaded

Remove the barrel.

There will be a small hole at the end of the magazine tube---shake or otherwise manipulate the gun till you see the end of a wooden dowel come out of that hole.

Then just pull it out slowly----there should be a rubber O-ring on that dowel that you don't want to lose----it gives the dowel some resistance.

Reassemble.

Its that easy----no tools.

That was sure a new one on me.  Pretty simple.  My experience with 870's and Winchesters were with plugs that actually compressed the spring, therefore the only way of removal was to get the spring out first.  This is a different deal, with the shells compressing the spring until they touch the plug "inside" the spring.  Very ingeneous.  Thanks.
