Opinions on TC Encore hunter package?
« on: June 15, 2010, 05:00:18 PM »
I'm very near stepping up from my trusty revolver for my handgun hunting. I've pondered a Contender also in 44 mag, but I think if I really want to upgrade to go even beyond that.
So I started looking at the Encore hunter package. 15" 308 barrel w/ a 2-7 scope of thiers. Any opinions on this setup? Would I be better to try and piece mill it together?
Thanks for you thoughts

If you shop and are willing to buy used and are willing to wait, you could probably get the setup for about $600; that would be for a stainless steel barrel and frame.  Since T/C honors their warranties even if you didn't buy the item new, I see little downside to buying used T/C products.  I like their scopes and I think they would be fine on a 308 Winchester barrel.  I like the 308 Winchester cartridge as well but if I were doing it, I would probably go with a 12 or 13 inch barrel with no iron sights.

I just picked one up from the local gun shop...couldn't help it it spoke to me ;) .It's in .308 with a TC scope 2-7x pretty good glass. Got the price down to $815 with case.
You probably could piece it together but for me dealing with FFL in mail etc I dunno...plus it was right there!
Nice combo I might add.
I am new to the .308...quite a round!. I am used to my contender in .223 ( a real tack driver-chuck killer) with mild recoil and the .308 is a handful but very versatile round as  many people say..Hope to post pix of it when done and hunt deer with it this yr!

As long as you're not looking for a fast follow up shot you can't go wrong with an Encore. Especially a stainless one for resistance to bad weather. They're accurate and versatile in blue or stainless. I started with blue Contenders and now have moved on to all stainless Encores so my calibers aren't so much limited by what the frame can handle. My avatar is a 13 inch 460 S&W mag with a muzzle brake. Also have a 20 inch 500 S&W mag and a 24 inch 308 in stainless Encores. All this being said the .308 chambering in a 12-15 inch Encore is a great choice for a hunting handgun.
