Model Railroading (pictures added)
« on: August 22, 2010, 04:09:27 AM »
Anyone into it?  Having little room for a large layout I'm thinking about a small N gauge setup.  I have a few cars.  Do Ho & N scale use the same transformers?

Used to have the big Lionels when I was a kid.  Spent hours playing with them.  If I had the space, the time and extra money I would love to set up an ho gauge layout.  Unfortunately I don't have the time or money to shoot or fish as much as I would like so I don't know where I would fit model railroading into the mix.

To answer your question I believe that the n and ho trains use different transformers but don't hold me to it.  One of my nephews is into model trains all his stuff is wireless which is really cool because it allows you to run more than one train on the same track and control them individually.

Never been much into it, but I've built many scale model aircraft.  Mostly 1:48 WWII aircraft.  I do a few modern jets but I typically drop back to 1:72 for those (1:48 is just too big).  It's a fun hobby.

I have two small "N" scale layouts , you can do a lot in a small area. one is 30X56 and the other is 32X53. I usually work on them in the winter when I can't go out and shoot ;D

I am going to put a different spin on this Swampman by suggesting that you google Microsoft Train Simulator. Never owned a copy myself but know one who does and he liked it a lot. Possibiltiys put you behind the engine to navigate the rails following all of the rules and signals as you navigate the yards (probably on all continates) to destinations of your choice to deliver & pickup cars.

I bring up Simulators as I have owned every version of the Microsoft Flight Simulator since version 4.0 in 92' or so. My current copy is X and is very good.

Yes Swampman it is, works best with a smooth surface, my other layout uses the regular track, it's more plyable .

Yes N and HO use the same transformer. I started with N and found it too small for me so went to HO.

This is simply unbelievable. The Miniatur Wunderland model railroad in Hamburg, Germany is the largest in the world, covering 16,146 square feet of space with more than 10,000 train cars running around its 6.8 miles of HO scale track. Now, the makers of this huge layout have created a video that gives you a jaw-dropping look at the vast scope of this intricate work of art.

Its construction started in 2000, and is still underway, with a tiny airport due for completion by the end of this year. This is just the beginning — there are plans to ddouble to layout by 2014. We especially like the Las Vegas portion, complete with dazzling LEDs lighting up the night.

You have to watch the new video above to get the full impact of this remarkable achievement, which has taken in excess of 500,000 working hours to build. There's good reason why this is Germany's most popular attraction, already visited by more than 5 million flabbergasted tourists.

Are there Old West themed layouts out there? I think that would be something to see.

Now that would be pretty cool.  Old steam engines out on the prairie. Maybe a small whistle stop train station with a pony express office.  Buffalo out on the prairie, Indians and outlaws hiding up in the hills.   A wooden trestle crossing over a ravine.  Could be a real neat set up.

Lots of that sort of thing available.  They even have live steam in the larger scales.

I just heard my wife's friend bought a "trunk full" of Lionel stuff at a garage sale and she's looking to get rid of it.

If it's nice I'd like to at least get the locomotive, some track, and the transformer.  I can pick up cars in the antique & junk shops I frequent.  I'm not sure my eyes are good enough for the smaller gauges.

nova71:  Your pic's are too big.  If you have a program that will cut the size down, they will transfer much easier.

I used to run the Lionel trains, then switched to HO.  Still have a 4x8 plywood layout in stored in my shop.  Only keep a display of some of my favorite engines now.   Like glanceblamm, I put a simulator in my computer, and still have it, just can't find time nowadays for some reason.  ;D

I think I've settled on On30.  That's 1:48 scale that runs on Ho track.  They also make On30 Track that has more realistic tie size.

Here's a little Bachmann Davenport industrial locomotive I picked up pulling an Ho scale boxcar on some Ho test track.

I'd like to have a Southern Pacific SD7 in N-Scale to go with some cars I picked up.
