Savage Scout .308 questions.
« on: September 15, 2010, 10:12:40 AM »
Looking into getting 1 of these, anyone have of ever shoot 1?  Just had neck surgery and a little concerned on the recoil of the gun.  This gun would be w Pa. deer rifle and maybe a bear gun to Canada someday.  Other option is Savage Weather Warrior in .243.  Open to options and any advice, I currently shoot a Older Remington model 7 in 7mm-08, just got a bug for another gun.

If i was in need of a deer/bear gun and recoil was a serious concern...i would look to a 6.5x55 or .260.  They are realistically the same.  They are light kickers but with heavy bullets they penetrate as well as their larger cousins.  I would feel ok with a .260 for any non dangerous game in the u.s.  Honestly though your 7/08 is about the same.

I don't care for savage rifles.  I would look to a marlin bolt gun, particularly one of their youth models if you want a light weight carry gun on the cheep.  Much nicer weapon and costs less to boot.

Honestly your Remington model 7 is much nicer than either one and i would just use that.  Spend the money on a nicer scope or perhaps some good binos.

If you are willing to use your 7mm-08 for black bear, than a .243 would be perfect for deer.
I am not afraid to make an example out of you

i think that i would want to try a scout rifle before i bought one to see if i liked the long eye relief but if you shoot handgun/scope maybe it would be the same. i do like the fact that there are backup sights on those rifles. they are light rifles but you could reduce the .308 loads till you have a full recovery. always fun to look at a new rifle. some may not like your choice but the savage rifles i have shoot great.
