messed up ejector
« on: September 13, 2010, 05:18:52 PM »
I have a 225 winchester that was rechambered from a 223 that is in need of a replacement ejector.
What caliber would be the closest match and where can I get one?

30-30, Brownell's have em.....they're out of the '99 and later tho. :-\   Numrich is out of the old style.  :'(

I have some shotgun ejectors, I can make ya one from one of them I think, I need to know if it's an old style or the newer thin post tho, what's the depth of the ejector notch? Although I think the late style will work in the old style barrels, but not the other way around.

After more thought on this, I think cutting a 223 ejector down a little to work would be better since the 30-30 ejector is much wider and would have to be narrowed, I have a late 223 ejector, so that's what I'll do.  ;) I'll cut the rim down on a 30-30 case to get it fitted good.

LT,

After trimming a 30-30 rim down to .473" and installing the 223 ejector in my 30-30AI barrel, it works fine just as it is with no modification, this is due to the 223 being rimless, the post works perfectly as is with the rimmed case, so I'll drop it in the mail to you today since Brownell's is out of stock on it also.  ;) You'll need to remove the lift button from the ejector housing since it's not used with rimmed chamberings.

On second third thought ::),  knowing brass isn't always to spec, the 223 ejector is flat across the top which provides little contact with the rim, that in combination with brass with a rim that's slightly undersized, I think it may be best to go back to plan A, a 30-30 ejector(which I have) will be a better choice since it's contoured to the case head.  I'll just have to narrow the post to fit the 223 ejector notch, so I'll get that done and get it in the mail to you today, will save having to deal with the 223 ejector that may not work well with your brass.  ;)

Like I said, "you know best"!  ;)
I think that was part of the problem in the first place.
I think the smith used the 223 ejector and because it doesn't catch much rim he cut it on an angle instead of profileing it.
One side to high and digging into the brass and the other side to low to touch the rim.
One way or the other, we will get it worked out.

Let me know how much I owe you to replace your stock.
Thanks again Tim!

I think this one will work fine as long as it doesn't break/bend, I had to anneal it to cut it on the mill, so it isn't as strong as a factory hardened part, but hopefully it will be Ok. No money needed, this was one of the batch of ejectors I bought on ebay for about $10 as I recollect, there were over a dozen various fat post ejectors which I thought were all shotgun, but there are three that work on the 30-30 just fine, I thinned the post both ways to fit the late 223 barrel.  ;)

Can it be hardened again?
Heating red and quenching quickly in either oil or water.
Not sure how it is done.
Will it be to brittle if rehardened?

That's what I was afraid of, I thought about heating it then quenching in used motor oil, but if it gets brittle, it would be worse than if it starts to bend a little, at least if it does, you still have the opportunity to harden it, not much chance once it breaks tho.  :-X
