Salt and Pepper Camping
« on: September 01, 2010, 05:57:12 AM »
Anybody ever try it? The idea is to get enough to eat carrying only salt and pepper for seasoning. My middle son and I have done it when the first week of squirrel season came in. we camp in the middle of a section that has a small pond and a wooods nearby we can hunt. The first night it was late by the time camp was set up and no supper. The next morning we were blanked on squirrels so went to fishing, 3 or 4 small bluegills and finally 2 bass about 1 pound each. We stopped fishing and went to cooking. My son looked at me and said, "Dad, thank God for bass." The next 2 days we had enough squirrel, fish, frogs, and a turtle to feed us. Primitive camping, packed in our own drinking water, went to bed when it got dark and up at first light. I aim to try it again.

Yep, me and my best friend did it every summer during middle and high school.  We allowed ourselves one buttpack of gear (std. 8-10" size bp).  Was a great skill sharpener and we typically made a thatched hut or similar shelter and tried different types quite often.  I kinda like my bed now that I'm getting older though.  lol  Or maybe just gotten soft.  ;)

When I read the thread title, I knew exactly what you were talking about schoolmaster. Did it all my life, up until about 25 years ago. It really will make you try harder. Good winter project to sharpen me back up.

Yeah that second morning my son and I didn't let any squirrels escape. Cooked them over the fire in a cast iron skillet. Pretty darned good.

Yep.  Cooking an old pigeon over an open fire cured me of salt and pepper camping...., ;D

I was only 12 so not too smart.... but I was hungry.
