S&W 610 revolver
« on: September 19, 2010, 11:42:16 AM »
Does anybody else have one? I just got a 610-2 with the unfluted cylinder and 6.5" barrel for what I felt was a pretty good price. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, but I'm pretty excited. The trigger is amazing on this gun. I don't know if it has been worked on or not, but if all S&W factory triggers are this nice then I should have started buying Smiths a long time ago!

I'm just curious what others think of this gun. How has the accuracy and reliability been, that sort of thing.

My next question, would I be a fool to ream the chambers out to 10mm Magnum? I wouldn't mind using this gun to hunt with, but the 10mm is a little on the light side by my standards. The 10mm mag is a moderate step up and it looks like it falls just short of the 41 Mag (which is pretty much the low end of the hunting spectrum by my standards). Has anyone done this conversion?

edit: For the record I have a 10mm already (Dan Wesson CCBT). I don't want any 10mm supporters to think that I'm saying that the 10mm is under powered. It's great in an autoloader, but a little light in a revolver.

I have one of the orginal runs of the 610 which I bought new. Mine is the five inch model. While I did have to send it back to Smith three times for quality issues, they fixed it. This is an extrodinary revolver. You ask about the 10 magnum. I don't beleive I would alter this piece,as it seems the value of them has skyrocketed. Also the 10 mag went nowhere, and brass might be an issue. The 10mm seems to be making a comeback somewhat. Enjoy your piece.

As a S&W Collector of course I'm going to tell you to either leave it alone...or sell it and buy a .41 mag or whatever floats your boat.  Don't ruin it by modifying it.

I had one and foolishly sold it. It was the most accurate N frame ive ever owned and maybe the most accurate 6 gun ive ever owned. As to rechambering it i wouldnt fool with it. With some creative handloading it is more then enough gun for deer pigs and black bear.

Just picked up a 610-3 on Gunbroker with the 3 7/8 barrel and fluted cylinder.  Hopefully it will be here by Friday!  I have a couple of Delta Elites, and a Dan Wesson CBOB in 10mm, and thought this would make a good companion to them!

I love mine and wouldn't consider a rechamber.  I would hate to mess with it's superb accuracy.

I'm glad to hear that everyone likes the 610. After getting a chance to shoot it a little over the weekend, I don't think that I'd rechamber it. It shoots so well that I don't want to mess it up.

I definately feel like it's the best $325 gun I've bought in a long time. I just can't get over how nice the single action trigger is. It's better than most of my rifles!

Wel............ If you got it for that price you should be arrested for theft! The ones I see are going for more than six bills, with most over eight c-notes.Glad I bought mine when they first came out. Beleive I paid a slight bit more than four bills in the early nineties.  Good Job!

Every once in a while I get a good dea on something. It makes up for all the times that I paid way to much for something because I just had to have it right now. ;D
