Shooting gas check bullets without the gas check
« on: September 07, 2010, 03:54:43 AM »
I'm sure this is covered elsewhere, but I can't find it.

Can you shoot a gas check design bullet without the gas check?  Specifically, the Lee 325gr 480 Ruger bullet (gas check design).  I will probably be loading it light for "plinking", maybe 1000 fps, (not 1500 fps like the hodgdon manual).  Like to not fuss with GCs if I don't have to.

Thanks

I use the Lyman sizer, which is kind of a pain because it wants to lube where the  GC should be. But otherwise, I've shot my 30 caliber cast without the GCs and had no problems. Just keep the speed down to a reasonable velocity.

Thanks guys.  I may 'speriment.

That's 'xactly what you have to do, 'speriment.
Different alloy, heat treat, air cooled, different lube, etc.
At under 1000 '/sec you will probably find something that your gun likes.

Here is my test load I shot in my old Sav. 170B pump 30-30.  Lee 170 gr. RNFP shot as cast from plain WW's,two coats Lee Alox/JPW,no gas check 7 grs. Red Dot,10 shots 50 yds. iron sights.  Ten shot average 1230 fps. I've been shooting this load in several 30-30's and get no leading.

I very seldom use gaschecks with my 30-30s. Light loads get Trailboss, medium (up to 1800 fps) get medium burning powder and cream 'o' wheat, and full loads get paper patched. I save the gaschecks for the M1 Garand.
