Remington 770 in .270
« on: December 26, 2008, 05:16:36 AM »
My dad gave me this gun as a Christmas gift a few weeks ago.  I took it out and sighted it in with the Bushnell scope that it came with and it gave me one inch groups all day long, with Remington 130 grain Core-Lokt ammo.  Some 1/2 and 3/4.  I mounted a Simmons whitetail classic on it, bore sighted it, and the first two shots were 1 1/2 inch high, 4 inches left and almost touching.  I made the necessary adjustments and had it shooting 1 1/2 above the bullseye before I left the range.  I cleaned the rifle, went back too the range a week later and the same results.  Two shots at 1 1/2 inch high almost touching each other.  I did not like this rifle much in the beginning.  I prefer the model 700.  After shooting this gun, I am very impressed with its accuracy.  The bolt is a bit rough to cycle, but I think I can live with that.  This rifle is rapidly becoming my favorite.  If Remington made one in 25-06 I would purchase one.  For the price, this an awesome gun.

Its good to see that I'm not the only one that likes the 770. I have one in 7mm-08 that gives me the same results.  Its put lots of meat in the freezer as well. Like you said the bolt is not the smoothest but I have never had to shoot 2x at a deer with it.

I use to own one in 243win,,,and it was a exceptionally accurate gun,the only reason I traded it in was I also thought the bolt was a lil ruff.Still stuck with remington though, went with the rem 700sps varmint 243win.

oh ya !!!! I forgot to mention, when I had my 770,I found ww243 80gr shot exceptionally well and even better yet with a barrel de-resonator.I would bet if you slid one on your 270 and found the sweet spot, you could shrink those groups even more.

I don't own one, but I glad to see a good review.  I thinking the idea of the rifle itself is sound.  I've only heard people cut it to ribbons and when I ask if they ever shot one they say "No". !??!??  Even clerks at the local gun store almost refuse to sell them even though its their bread and butter.  Its not the first "ugly duckling" that Remington has turned out.  Take the 788s and my one hole shooting 581.  It gets out more than my 541S!

In 3 gun shoot out gun magazine test the 770 will frequently come out on top.  Glad it's working out for you.
