Firearms in Commerce Senate Committee Hearing Postponed
« on: September 14, 2010, 09:31:46 AM »
While I am grateful to God this committee has been postponed, this is a reelection season and this would be a controversial debate to be associated with right now.

NOTICE OF COMMITTEE HEARING POSTPONEMENT

The Senate Committee on the Judiciary hearing on "Firearms in Commerce: Assessing the Need for Reform in the Federal Regulatory Process" scheduled for Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in Room 226 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building has been postponed.

An unofficial release from a Senate staffer indicated, "This hearing is intended to examine the BATFE's practices for enforcing Federal laws against federally licensed firearms sellers and proposed legislation to make reforms and improvements to that system.

"The hearing will look at S.941, legislation proposed by Senator Mike Crapo, of which Senator Leahy is a cosponsor along with a bipartisan group of 34 other Senators. The legislation is intended to improve the regulatory process for federally licensed dealers by, among other provisions, instituting a graduated penalty system, providing expanded administrative and judicial review of agency sanctions and revocations, and directing the Attorney General to produce investigative guidelines for the BATFE. "

Here's who was called to the committee and the sub-committee.

Democrats:
Patrick Leahy, Vermont, Chairman
Herb Kohl, Wisconsin
Dianne Feinstein, California
Russ Feingold, Wisconsin
Chuck Schumer, New York
D ick Durbin, Illinois
Ben Cardin, Maryland
Sheldon Whitehouse, Rhode Island
Amy Klobuchar, Minnesota
Ted Kaufman, Delaware
Arlen Specter, Pennsylvania
Al Franken, Minnesota

Republicans:
Jeff Sessions, Alabama, Ranking Member
Orrin Hatch, Utah
Chuck Grassley, Iowa
Jon Kyl, Arizona
Lindsey Graham, South Carolina
John Cornyn, Texas
Tom Coburn, Oklahoma

Subcommittee On The Constitution - Chair: Russ Feingold (D-WI) - Ranking Member: Tom Coburn (R-OK)
held fast

Well, at least they wont' get any new legislation passed.  I kinda disagree with postponing until after election season though.

While the American public do seem to be split in regards to Democrats vs Republicans, I don't think the split is so even regarding firearms laws.  The Democratic Party as a whole seems to be vehemently anti-gun, but their voters aren't as staunch, and the issue has cost them votes before.

Postponing this IMHO is more likely to save Democratic seats rather than to lose them.  If they maintain a majority in Congress we're left biting our nails again hoping that nothing new gets passed.

Do you believe for a minute that there won't be some unannounced en camera meetings and discussion to hammer out more restrictions?  This is more smoke and mirrors to try to mislead us.

This one was actually intended to be an improvement for dealers tho who knows what might have come from it had it gone thru. Right now FFL dealers are losing their licenses for minor infractions that were not intentional. This bill was supposed to establish a graduated system to prevent that and cost their license only for intentional and serious infractions.

I believe the new laws passed by Montana, Alaska, and one other state, (I can't remember which one) may also be on the agenda.  The new laws say if the gun is made entirely within the state, and is sold for use in that state, it does not fall under the Interstate Commerce rules.  Therefore the BATF does not have any jurisdiction in it's manufactor, sale, and use.  Interstate Commerce is the article and reason used to give BATF jurisdiction.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

GB, I hope you're right. With Schumer on the committee, anything can happen as he is anti gun.
