NEWBIE
« on: September 14, 2010, 05:08:45 AM »
Hi all, new here, and learning a lot.

i will be trying the o-ring and set screw on the fore-end to help tighten my groups, and will certainly be polishing the chamber.   but my question is;  could the fact that i am only neck-sizing my ammo be causing the stuck cases and pop-opens?  I just started reloading a couple of weeks ago with a lee classic reloader.  i bought it because it was inexpensive, and everything i read led me to believe that neck-sizing only would be more accurate.  now i believe it is causing headspace issues and stuck cases.

also, when i shoot certain ammo (factory winchester 95g silvertips) it seems to jam.  It is very hard to break the action open.  anyone else seen this?

I kinda figured that.  I don't own any ejectors, thanks to Tim (Quickdtoo) he converted the last ejector I had to extractor and end of that problem.  I don't understand the headspace question.  Some of mine break hard once in a while. Tim or someone more knowledgeable than myself will be along soon to help.

Welcome aboard Strange1!  ;) The Lee Loader will work if you don't load too hot, but eventually you're gonna have to full length resize or the rounds won't fully chamber preventing the action from locking up completely. One thing to check is make sure the barrel is still fitted correctly, remove the forend and see if the barrel is still tight, it may need to go back to the factory for a new barrel if it's loose(or it can be shimmed per the FAQs), if the barrel isn't locking up correctly, it will cause problems.

Yah, the Lee works best in straight wall cases for repetetive reloading.  I have one for my .45-70, .45 Colt and .45 ACP.  I'd recommend for just a small starting price to get the Lee handpress and the Deluxe Rifle dies for the .243.  The deluxe rifle die set lets you full length or neck only size and if you buy the dies at the same time as the handpress kit, you get almost everything you need for just over 100 bucks with shipping.  8)  I have a feeling that your brass growth is the problem with the headspacing anyway.  Especially, if you got lucky with a short chamber, you should length size your brass, even if using the Lee Classic Loader.

The only other thing you will want sooner or later will be the factory crimp die, length gauge, cutter for length sizing, primer pocket cleaner and possibly a universal decapper die if you want to decap without resizing the cases.  If you get it all at once, it'll save you lots on shipping or buying locally, typically.  8)  I personally also purchased a ball head cutter for easier holding onto when length sizing.  Makes it a lot easier.

history of this particular gun.   i bought it several years ago, mounted a cheapo scope on it, and shot it about 50 times before putting it in the cabinet to rest.  a few weeks ago i got it out and decided to see just how good it was.  i put about 100 more rounds though it shooting at water bottles and such, never trying to measure a group, just watching stuff blowup.   :o

yesterday i mounted a tasco varmint/tactical scope to help me see better.  per tasco instructions i started zeroing at 50 yards.  after feeding it several bullets, i managed to shoot 2 consecutive groups of .6 and .63 inches and decided to move to 100 yards.  i only shot two groups at 100 yards, the best was 1.6 inches, we wont talk about the other.  of the 24 or so bullets i fed it yesterday, only about 6 ejected.

today I polished the chamber and put a washer and set-screw on the fore end.  i shot 9 times today and all ejected properly.  the first group was about 3.5 inches.  i attribute that to a super clean barrel.... maybe.  i let it sit for about an hour and shot another group.  the first two were practically touching, the third was 6 inches left. user error??????  the third group measured 1.6, the same as yesterdays group.  I think i am shooting about as good as i can with such a heavy trigger, so now what?  try a new load?   i am thinking about sending it in for a .223 barrel, mostly so i can get a trigger job at the same time.  polishing the chamber seems to have worked very, very good.  but the washer under the forearm really did not help any.

what loads seem to work well in these guns?  i am launching a 65g v-max bullet with 41 grains of IMR 4895 with an oal of 2.6"

i got the primer pocket cleaner, and have been measuring the brass to make sure it isnt too long.  several cases were near maximum length, so i wll need a trimmer before i start loading again.

Strange1,

Try shooting your 243 with the forestock removed and see if you can get a better grouping.  You will need to put the forestock back on after each shoot to reload.  Support the gun under the front of the receiver when shooting, not by the barrel.

Also, better call H&R Cust. Service on barrel availablility, from what I have read on this forum the pickins is real slim and nothing new in the pipeline until next year.  Could always buy a used barrel at the H&R classifieds and see if it fits correctly.  If it doesn't fit can either sell it or fit it per the FAQs.

Good luck with your Handi and welcome to the forum.

If you are not experienced at benching a rifle it isnt as easy as it seems, still lots of user variables for you to learn and tune out of yourself.
I would say unresized brass is your case problem, and IMHO if you load 10-15% below top reload data (for now) you will learn a lot about yourself and the gun.
Its such a common caliber, dont you know someone who reloads who may have a die set to full length resize for you to start over?
BTW, since you already have a smallbore why dont you get a 357Mag and Max it or just go straight to the 45-70 with big lead bullets and really start having fun!
