Rifle Sights for turkey gun
« on: September 19, 2010, 11:56:49 AM »
I have traded for a turkey barrel for my handi rifle. It is the 12 ga 3.5"   I know everyone says the barrel is too thin to tap. I am looking for a set of sights that are steel and are contoured to fit the barrel. Would like somethink with fiber optics. I have a friend that owns a race shop that is real good at tig welding. I was thinking about getting him to run a bead around the front and rear of the sight. He feels comfortable that he can do it so if I can find the sights I need then I am going to get it started.  Thanks in advace for your help.

I used a set of muzzleloader sites, 10.00 at the bargain table. The barrel I got off Gunbrokers for 40 bucks. I did drill through the chamber and tapped with 6/48 screws. I cut the barrel off to 24", mounted the front site the same way. Used long screws and ground them to fit and then polished the chamber and bore. Crap job, but have fired 100s of rounds with no issues. Next time I will weld/silver solder the rear. I do get a stuck shell every once in a while. I just drop a slug down the barrel and it comes right out. I load my own shells for turkey using unslit steel shot wads. Almost shoots like rifle out to about 75Y. The height of the front site is most important. Mine shoots way low. The fiber optics are really nice but I have to make a triangle to hit center of mass.

Here's what I did to make a turkey gun out of my old 1908 H&R.

Quick......Are those sights steel?  If so do you have a model #.  Can the rear base be used with a different type of sight such as a fiber optic instead of the peep?

Front sight is steel, rear sight is the Williams WGRS-HR which is aluminum, both have one screw and Loctite 380 Black Max which is made for sights and ribs to be installed with no screws. The sight is made for the 1.1" chamber swell, you'd have to use a Williams WGOS for a barrel sight further down the barrel, they make a fiber optic insert.
