Carbine disarm:  "Here, grab this...BANG BANGBANG BANGBANG BANG!" C'mon you guys, not only is the range that you use a firearm in a house or room to room, not important, as long as you place your rounds properly, especially if you are close...but you have a power and ammo AND weapon selection all pre-planned, and you are retreating to handguns?  Why? If it is because you ALREADY have a handgun and don't want to go out and buy a long gun, ok, SAY that. But here is the bottom line... 30 rounds, great functional reliability, good delivery platform for point shooting, platform for weapon mounted light, wound channel the size of an NFL football.  Geez, you could velcro a cell phone to an AR15 if you wanted.  OK, I'm done...

JeffG,
Not sure I understood your post, so I'll try to make sure you understood mine. My weapon of choice for a gunfight would never be a handgun. My Bushmaster Shorty would be the weapon of choice. Having done a bit of structure clearing, I'll just say that is easier to do a long gun disarm than a handgun disarm if the proper retention techniques are used. Can you visulize an untrained soul clearing his house room by room with a long gun? I can, and it ain't pretty!

You and I (an many others, I am sure)agree on the weapon.  Pistols, unfortunately because the way they are conventionally placed into operation, (extend arms and gin sight picture)are easy to perform disarms on.  The only improvement I have used with that is Mosaad third-eye, or Center Axis Relock techniques.  The "CAR"  works for long guns too.
My thought, or opinion, is that even the most skilled are at a definite disadvantage with a handgun, in terms of STOPPING the threat.  Use Long guns, get training. and maintain distance and cover.
Too many people are fatally hurt after delivering a lot of hits with a handgun....if you don't have a choice because of concealment needs,or portability while doing other things, OK, but you are in your house.  Use a long gun, that was my point, it may have been a bit overstated, I'm sorry.

JeffG,
Agreed!! Long guns trump short ones every time. My point was in the majority of the cases in a home defense situtation the long gun is better deployed from a baracaded position by the average citizen. I'll go one step farther and sat that's where they should stay unless the house is on fire. I have done clearings with both types of arms. and feel comfortable with either. I have done this most frequently with handguns, but given the choice I'll still go with the Bushy and at least one other officer!
Stay Safe,
Savage

How about a lever action carbine in 357 Mag, 44 Mag or 45 Colt. A Marlin or Winchester carbine would be an excellent choice.

I'm starting to move to this choice - have a Marlin 1894p with a scout scope on it - sure fun to shoot.  Still use an m1 and a Rem 1100 shotgun for the home.
