OT Red Dot??
« on: September 08, 2010, 05:30:09 AM »
I know a few of you guys have red dot sights on your handi's so I'm askin' for your advice.
I want to put a red dot on my 44mag handi... it's been shortened to 18" and wears straight comb synthetic stocks... it's my tight woods/ treestand gun.
What is a decent red dot for it that won't break the bank?? I'll spend up to $100 bucks or so.
Any advice you guys can give would be great.
Thanks.

Recently I put a 1.25 x4.5 x30mm swift(made in china)on a 357 max. This scope has a switchable red to green dot reticle. It has the advantages of a low power scope and also a lighted dot. So far it is the cat's meow. You might want to give it a look.G66

Spanky,

The cheap BSA red dots have surprised me in their tollerance to recoil.  I wouldn't put one on a .45/70 but ran it on my .30/30 Handi for a while with good result.

I am running a Bushnell Trophy red dot on my .45/70 Handi and it is doing quite nicely.  My brother runs a Trophy on his as well.  Work right nice for hog killing.

Have heard good reports on Tasco red dots but no personal experience.  Same goes for the Tru Glo red dots and am considering their 2X version to replace the Bushnell on my hog gun.  Will say that the "good" red dots are going to cost over $100 realistically and those nice little holographic sights from JPoint and Burris are running between $200 and $300.

I had a Bushnell blister-pack red dot on my NEF 30-30 at the beginning of last season.
~$40 at Academy. Its a 5 MOA, but in a rest, I could get 2" groups at 100.
Shot a couple of does with it. 5 yards & 75 yards.
Put the 1.5-4.5 Banner back on only because it offered some vision correction that I needed at 75+ yards.

The nice thing about the red dot on the handi is that you don't have to feel around under an eyepiece to find the hammer extension.
Jumped a deer once with the Banner on there; as I threw the gun up to my shoulder, I tried to pull the hammer back but hit the breech button and sent the cartridge over my shoulder.

A 44 mag shortie with a red dot would be a fun stalking gun.
The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

Well, I was wrong on the Ultra Dot, it's 139.99.  The Millett is on sale for 79.95, has a 3 min dot size and can be had silver or matte in 1 inch.  Comes with rings and extension tube and scope covers.  They also have a 30 mm size tube for the same price but it has a 5 min dot.  The Ulta dot has a 4 min dot.  The TruGlo has a 2.5 min dot on the 2 power.  Bushnell Trophy is also on sale for 79.95 with red dot and dial in reticles, 84.95 with the green dot and dial in reticles, also with rings.  They have several sales on scopes and red dots.  Check em out at www.natchezss.com.  DP

I like the bushnell trophy, you have red/green 1-11

you also have dot, big dot, cross and circle dot.  LOVE IT!

Not sure what they cost 120-130 but I think its worth it, Ive had em on everything from .22 to 45-70 and always good to go. (unless you forget to turn it off)

one thing is make sure you get a shroud for it, bright sunlight will make that big red dot barely visible, especially if the battery is a bit low

btw its what my 44mag is wearing atm.  ;)

Good luck

Dave

I have tru-glos and A1-Optics.  I have a momentary remote swith on one of the A1s that is on the forend of the rifle with double sided tape.  All you do is press the switch pad with your thumb when you want the scope lit.  Take your thumb off the switch and it is off.  I don't like the spring coil wire between the scope and the switch.  Just another thing to hang up in brush.  I too am always forgetting to turn them off.  That's why I buy CR2032s by the 20 pack cheap on fleabay.  They come out of Hong Kong, but they're Sonys.

I have a couple of the Bushnell Trophy red dots and like them real well.  If you watch you can buy one of the newer models with the 4 different recticles for $ 69.99 with free shipping on E bay. I have 2 of them on rifles and 1 on a crossbow and have had zero problems with them.
I also have a Burris Fast Fire red dot on a 44 handi shortie that I really like, Its nice because it adjusts the brightness of the dot automaticly but will run you more than $ 100.00.

I got one of the tasco solar powered ones. So I am not too worried about leaving on and just use battery at lower light conditions.
Havn't recoil tested it much yet. but sounds like these little things are pretty tough.
thanks Don.

The entry level Ultra Dot shows up on a lot of pistols.  I'm going to get one for a 10 22.  It's hardly a test for its recoil resistance, but they seem to have a good reputation.

I have a red dot on my 357 stub barrel. It's about a perfect combo.

I have a Bushnell Trophy red dot sight on my .243 handy and it works well out the the ranges I hunt at which is around 100 to 200 yards at the most given the brush on this Westcoast Island.  I have a much larger scope but I find the red dot keeps this rifle handi.   ;D

i have a question for you guys that have the bushnell trophy, millett an the truglo red dots.i know years back when red dots were starting out that you had to have youre eye perfectly centered with the dot in the scope or bullet would be off its mark.is this still true with the ones i listed.im worried that if i get one an i have a quick shot that i might not be perfectly inline with the scope.if i see the dot am i going to hit what the dot is on.
thanks

I recently bought my first red dot for an M4 that I built. It was recommended to me by several others and has worked out great for me. It's a Strikefire, made by Vortex, a company that I believe will be a force in optics in the near future. It comes with rings in your choice of high or low and sells for $149. It's hard to beat their warranty:
Repair or replace your Vortex product for any reason at NO CHARGE TO YOU. It doesn't matter how it happened, whose fault it was, or where you purchased it.

    * Unlimited lifetime Warranty
    * Fully transferable
    * No warranty card to fill out
    * No receipt needed to hang on to

Kawie,

Theoretically red dots are suppose to be parallex(sp) free and whatever the red dot is on is suppose to take the hit.  I've never had much luck with those "quick shots" regardless of the type of sight, including the red dots.  With the red dot I don't worry about being square to the sight and the eye relief but it makes a big difference if I follow the fundamentals.  Breathing and trigger squeeze will still affect the shot even when cheek to stock weld and proper sight picture are not a significant part of the equation.

I found a few years ago when I first got into non magnified red dots (starting with trap shotguns) that it was beneficial to practice and shoot  with both eyes open which gives one depth perception for distance and a proper stereo view of the world.

Your brain will fool you into seeing the dot with both eyes as long as your shooting eye is looking down the sight, which is kind of neat.  ;D
Cheers!

ive got 2 of the cheap bsa red dots, had one on my 44 handi for well over 1000 rounds and 5 years of pretty rough abuse. the other was mounted on my 45-70 and seen the same abuse and probably 4-500 rounds of ammo. i never had a problem with either one of them, still have one on the 44 but traded the other and went back to a scope on the 45-70.
