"ringed" barrel in a model 28 Smith?
« on: September 20, 2010, 01:23:29 PM »
A friend of mine picked up a model 28 Smith which had a "ringed" barrel.  The bulge is right at the front sight and the barrel has been back-bored to 1/8" behind where the front sight stops at the back end.  Anyone know where to get a replacement (6") barrel and how hard would it be to change out?
Any suggestions???  Over all the gun is in really good shape except for that one little detail. :P

Can't answer on the doing of it, maybe someone else has, but Numrich has a 4-1/2" barrel in stock.  6-1/2 is sold out.  8(

I'd send it back to S&W.

Gunbroker.com has a couple of 4" barrels. Nothing on Auction Arms.

joe:  contact S&W first before you do anything else.  I have a 6" bbl from a Highway Patrolman (M28-2) that S&W removed so they could replace it with a 3.5" barrel.  You can always asa S&W that if you send in the revolver with a spare 6" barrel if they could re-barrel for you.....  Just a thought.

Thanks all.  I'm seeing the owner after work tonight and I'll suggest he send it back to S&W, or at least contact them.  I saw the 4" barrel on Numrich...$149 best I remember.  He says he's just going to shoot it and see what the accuracy, or lack thereof, is before he does anything.  It may be that it will shoot ok, but unless the backboring is really square I have my doubts.  Not like it's a crown on the muzzle.
It's a real shame, the action and everything else is great about it, locks up tight, trigger is as good as any I've seen on a Smith...oh well.
It just hit me....wonder if the whole barrel could be sleeved??  Never heard of it done to a pistol. ???

Converting it to .44 Special would be my choice.

Now THAT"S an idea!!! but if the backboring is done even reasonably well it should shot OK. Lots of those from the cast bullet shooters who used slip on gas checks.. The 44 special is the best idea,,,or even better sell the revolver to a worthy old guy (me) for a paltry sum and let me be saddled with the bills for the conversion!
