Cold Steel Knives
« on: September 16, 2010, 01:08:34 PM »
Got a wild hair and wanted a good heavy knife to put with my camping/hunting gear. As always I spent a half a day researching different styles and brands. Finally ended up buying two knives by Cold Steel. Could have made do with one but I liked them both. The Trail Master bowie in carbon (I couldn't afford the San Mai) and the Spartan folder. Both of these are massive, insanely sharp, well made knives that should cover any heavy duty jobs I may run across.  I watched the videos of these two being tested and was very impressed. Have owned Cold Steel products before and have always found them to be not the prettiest but some of the toughest knives in the field.

I'm part of the light, sharp knife and small axe crowd, personally. To me a big clumsy knife is just that; a big clumsy knife.  Too much weight for the degree of efficiency, and too thick for efficient slicing and whittling( a big part of survival chores).  With that said, Cold Steel makes an excellent big clumsy knife.

Joel I agree with you 100% that these two knives aren't suited for certain jobs. I have smaller, lighter knives for those jobs. These two are just big, cutting, hacking, chopping tools.

Yeah, but can you cut up a car with one?  ;)

I like to have a long thick (clumsy) chopper around. Kinda the lazy man's hatchet; I don't have to aim the thing too close on what I want to chop.

I hunt rattlesnakes, and though I often use a small sharpened shovel to cut the head off when they're in the noose, a big knife seems, I don't know, more...... appropriate?
