bubba: I think the closest you can come to a really effective self defense round in 32 caliber is the 7.62x25 Tokarev. Significantly more powerful than the 32 H&R and in a fairly lightweight and easy package to handle. Another new developement in the 32 caliber line that comes to mind is the 32 whatcha callit that is based on a necked down 380 acp case - shoots a 60 gn 32 acp bullet at about 1200'/sec. Those are both in semi-auto form. I think the 32 H&R would be okay with a nice swc bullet or an expanding soft-nose. HTH. Mikey.

My wife packs one a Taurus 2" with federal 95 gr wadcutters and fed jhp I may reload for this. It seems to be very close to 38sp loads. She early arthritic condition in her hands and the light recoil of the ported Taurus aggress with her.

I have carried a S&W 311 for several years. It is light for year around carry. At 7 yards, it is very accurate with Federal 85 grain HP, with double action use.

Guys,
IMHO the only advantage to a smaller caliber is that it can be had in a small package. The 32 mag revolver is about the same weight and size as the light weight 38 spl. I would think with pratice, anyone that can handle the 32 mag should be able to handle the 38 spl. Whata ya think??

Savage, I have both and have found the 32 more managable on rapid fire, close range plus it is nice to have the extra shot.

I'm sure you're correct. I have no experience with the 32 mag, but would expect less recoil from the 32. The 38 snubbies are not heavy recoiling guns. Anyone with an interest in the development of basic defensive skills should be able to become minimally proficient with a 38. That said, I carry a 32 ACP 24/7, not because I consider it to be an adequite combat handgun, but because it weighs less than 7 oz and is only 3/4" thick. Most of the time, this is in addition to a larger caliber. If my 32 and 45 were the same size, guess which one I would carry---------

I saw this thread kinda late, but here's my two cents. If you wanted to use the .32 for self defense, you should probably go with MagSafe ammo. I know lots of people question the effectiveness of prefragmented bullets, but factory ammo for the .32 is pretty weak. You can get the Magsafe via e-mail at Cheaperthandirt.com fairly cheaply, $20 for six! :shock: But unless you live in Beruit, you shouldn't need many.
