Dove season opens next week.
« on: August 27, 2010, 09:41:39 AM »
My property is surrounded by fields full of corn stubble.   It will sounds like Afghanistan around here for the next couple of weeks.  :D

I have a good sized piece of property with a fallow field right next to me and my neighbor across the road has a stock pond.  I kid you not when I tell you I can literally stand on my back deck and shoot doves.

You just need to cook some barbeque for lunch and all us graybeard members will be glad to come over and help you solve your dove infestation problem. What time you want us there?

I'll bring adult beverages for after the hunt is over and the guns are away.
Bass and Sam Adams OK?
Do you guys do a draw for who limits out first and who limits out with the fewest shells?

... who limits out with the fewest shells...

For me, better make it fewest BOXES of shells.
Maybe the Benelli that I got yesterday will help me stay on 'em.

;) Sounds like you have some wonderful dove shooting...to get that I have to trip to Az...our doves are spotty at best if I get 20 a year here I have done ok..but sept 1st, grouse season, snipe, and special deer season opens..special elk is already here, but no permit for this hunt..the 15th is the first general hunt I will try, then sage grouse the 18th, then antelope the 25th...BUT the dove hunting would provide more shooting than ALL OF THESE...ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I must say that I am more excited about the dove opener than I have been in several years about deer season. That has become pretty routine, shoot, butcher, freeze, eat. This is FUN, and I have not had a chance to hunt doves in a long time. Digging out the ammo cans, the WD40, the decoys, my lightweight camo clothes.

I haven't enjoyed any really good dove shooting since I moved from my homestate of Florida...New Mexico had some dove but not in the concentrations fla had around the farming areas. Those hunts are a real treasure in my memory. Putting on the BBQ early in the morning, usually a hog cut into chunks, the hunt began at noon & lasted for most of us untill we ran out of shells.

Have you noticed how easy it is to miss a dove. Then the big feed under a shade tree on the edge of the field. It was more than a hunt it was a social gathering and a southern tradition.  ;D Maybe I should plan my next visit home during dove season.......Humm

It is a social event, and available to just about anyone, if you can afford a wally world sale pump, or a pawn shop single shot and a $5 box of shells you are in ! Like catfishing, it does not require special equipment or training, no high tech gear, just the love of the sport and some side dishes. Thats the kind of group I am proud to participate in.

It rained on us all morning and I saw a fraction of the doves I found scouting Monday.  Still, two of us had a reasonable shoot:

went to sons in Cape G for weekend, saw two,2, DOS, zwei birds, and they were in town. They say they are having a really bad year for birds. There has been very little harvested yet though, maybe next time.

We've been crushing them this year in both Eastern Kansas and Western Missouri... It's all about habitat and pressure.  You have food, you manage the pressure, you'll have doves.
