rusty and crud filled barrel
« on: September 01, 2010, 08:39:05 AM »
Just picked up a 45 huntsman at a gun show for 75.00 that had a stuck firing pin and a very dirty barrel.  After much reading on this sight I managed to take the action completely apart and free up the firing pin and get all the rust and crud out of the action.  I also got the press fit breech plug out after going thru a shotgun rod three wooden dowels and finally a steel rod. Little side note, if you purchase a used muzzleloader check it with a bullet puller first.  When I got the breech plug out a ball and powder charge came out with it, luckily I had soaked it in oil for a couple of days.  Now that I can see down the barrell I realize how bad it is, I have run  a ton of patches thru it along with running a brass brush in between.  I can see I'm going to have some pitting but there is also quite a bit of crud left.  I was wondering if anybody had any good techniques for getting this stuff out other than days of scrubbing.

A stiff brush on a drill may help you salvage it. Along with a very agressive cleaner Break Free should help with the rust. Some of these other guys may have a proven concotion for the crud. The good thing is if the rifling it's self is stll intact you should end up with a cheap old shooter. Right now my 45 Huntsman is my favorite. Kurt

Spray some PB Blaster in the barrel and let it sit overnight. It's great stuff and will eat up the rust and crud. It might take a couple times but it should do the trick.
